Mason only slept for three hours.
When he woke up, he was still tightly embracing Zoe. Her silk
nightgown was slightly disheveled, revealing her shoulder in the soft morning light.
She was still in his arms.
Mason lowered his head, pressing his face against the nape of her neck. It was a comforting warmth.
After a tender moment, he got up.
In the morning, there was an important bidding meeting at the company that he had to attend.
Mason freshened up and changed into a new outfit. As he was knotting his tie, he walked back to the bedroom. Zoe was awake, sitting at the bedside in a daze. When she heard his footsteps, she looked up, and their eyes met.
After a few seconds, she seemed to recall the events from the night before. Her voice was calm as she spoke, “Mason, the truth doesn’t matter that much anymore. It’s been so long, and I don’t really care. Let’s move forward.”
The morning light softened her appearance, and her words sounded rational.
“Consider what I said last night.”
Mason remained silent. He stepped toward the large bed, his voice slightly hoarse as he said, “Help me tie this, I can never get it right.”
The last few words had a hint of emotion, probably thinking of the
few warm scenes in their three years of marriage.
Unexpectedly, Zoe didn’t refuse. Like in the past, she knelt on the bed to help him with his tie, and he leaned slightly to make it easier for
her.

Mason grabbed her waist, easily holding onto her. He lowered his head to kiss her.

She didn’t want his compensation, and she didn’t want him.
Her crying was low and suppressed. She needed this release.

In the afternoon, at three o’clock, Zoe went out alone.
She drove her own car. It was a white Maserati she had bought a long time ago but rarely drove. She used to enjoy riding in a chauffeur- driven car because the chauffeur would address her as “Mrs.” when
