Chapter 522
Zoe nodded in response.
He called her over and pulled her into his arms when she was close enough. Both of them were sitting on the couch side by side now.
He pondered on it for a while before he told her his speculation. It wasn’t like he had any proof, but she was his wife. Essentially, she was the closest person to him in the world. It was only right that they could talk about anything with each other.
She gasped. “Do you really think it’s Aunt Lila?”
It wasn’t that surprising that she was astounded. After all, Lila was the pride of the Gernon family. She was talented and led a much more free-spirited life than her twin sister, Lisa.
So, it was hard for Zoe to accept that his aunt was harassing Westley for no obvious reason and having an affair with Dr. Jürgen, who was a married man. The kicker came when she learned that Mason suspected that Lila was the killer.
It was just too unfathomable.
However, she believed in Mason with all of her heart. If he suspected his aunt, then there must be a good reason behind it.
Looking at him, she asked, “Have you told your parents about your speculation?”
Brushing her cheeks gently, he smiled bitterly, “I don’t even know where to begin! How am I supposed to tell my mom that her sister was the sole reason she had suffered while waiting for my dad to return to her throughout all these years? Apparently, Lila did it just so she could have my dad for herself, no less!”
She remained quiet at that. So did Mason.
All of a sudden, he said, “I’ll get in touch with Noah first thing in the
morning. I’m going to send you, Mia, and our kids to stay in
Nihonburg for a while!”
Given how sick in the mind Noah was right now, he was sure the
psycho wouldn’t even let a rat creep into his place without him knowing. That meant that Zoe and the kids would be perfectly safe
there.
Needless to say, he was being paranoid.
However, he had gone through too much. He no longer wanted to know how it felt to lose her. Also, he was tired of waiting for her. All he wanted now was for Zoe and the kids to live a good, happy life.
Zoe gave it some thought and said, “I’ll talk to Mia about it.” Then, she looked at Mason. She needed to tell him something, but she decided/ against it eventually.
Truth be told, she was very worried about him, but her pride was holding her back. So, she didn’t say anything. In fact, it’d be difficult for her to show him some concern for the time being.
At that moment, not saying anything was better than forcing herself
Needless to say, he knew what was going through in her mind.
Hugging her tightly, he, too, didn’t say anything. All he did was hold her in his tight embrace. This was the first time their hearts were this
close.
Turning off the lights outside, he lowered his head and leaned into her ear. He asked softly, “Do you still love me, Zoe?”
She didn’t respond to that.
Instead, she wrapped her arms around his neck and lowered her voice, “You told me that we’ll have a brand new year and that it’s a promise!”
Tears began to fill his eyes.
Being the cold, distant man that he was, few souls in the world could stir his heart. There were times when he thought the world had taken so much away from him. At this moment, however, it felt as if he had the most precious thing in the world
Zoe was priceless to him.
His voice was husky when he responded, “I know that and I intend to keep it!”
They might’ve slept late last night, but everyone was up when morning came.
All three of them had a quiet breakfast.
Mason didn’t eat much. After that, he stood by the window and lit a cigarette. The morning light shone on him and brought out his defined features. His neatly trimmed hair glistened underneath its brilliant glow.
She looked more carefully and found some lines at the corner of his eyes. He might’ve been thirty-five years old, but those lines didn’t add any age to his looks. Instead, they made him look more mature and charming.
