She looked at him and said slowly, “A couple is supposed to have each other’s back, but we’re about to get divorced soon. How do you think I’ll cast my vote for your precious project?”
Still leaning on the wall, he stared daggers at her. She had always been the soft, submissive wife, but she looked very different now. He was furious and he had always looked charming when he was.
After a brief pause, he took out a cigarette and started smoking it,

He asked her, softly, “What are you trying to say?”
Taking a deep breath, she uttered the point, “I’ll cast a vote against you if you don’t agree to the divorce! You spent two years on this
project and I hesitate to think you’d choose your marriage over it. Isn’t it true that you cared most about powers and wealth?”
Snuffing out the cigarette, he held the back of her neck, “You wouldn’t
dare!”
Flashing him a gloomy smile, she retorted, “You’re welcome to try my patience!”
Pulling her close, he locked gazes with her and murmured
menacingly, “I gave you the shares as a gesture of my love. Are you turning it against me now?”
There were tears in her eyes and she was shivering all over.
She was very scared but she had no choice but to muster up courage and fight back. “That’s right! I’m turning it against you now! Turn down my proposal to divorce and I’ll make sure you know how it feels for someone to squander something you cherished and take away something that matters the most to you.”
She went all out!
He glared at her for a long time before releasing her suddenly and mocking her, “Congratulations, Zoe. You’ve got me! That project is, indeed, very important to me. I’ll consider your proposal.”
He, too, had his pride and he wasn’t about to put it down to soothe
her.
Before he left, he spoke with his back turned to her, “You’re not me, Zoe. How would you know what matters to me most?”
