Chapter 381
it was night by the time Zoe sent Noah back home. He was staying in Zoe’s old apartment. It was located in a convenient area and the facilities were adequate as well. Still, he was only planning on staying there until he found his own place
It was misty as Noah parked his car at the apartment’s parking lot
He put a cigarette between his lips, but left it unlit
He was holding Zoe’s hands
They had been apart for six years Zoe was a mother now, but their bond was as strong as ever The way he saw it she was still the same younger sister who followed him everywhere
“Noah!” she called out to him softly They were the only ones in the car. It was the perfect place for them to talk about anything private and confidential, such as the issues revolving around Mason and Liam.
Looking out the windshield Noah told his side of the story with a dour face
“Dad was rather ruthless when he was acquiring one of the
companies back then In a way, the acquisition caused the former owner to go bankrupt! Then, the guyjumped off a building and left his children behind. They didn’t even have a home
“Dad felt so guilty over it that he supported them financially, but he didn’t let anyone know about it. Theson, who was the older kid of the two, grew up to become one of the finest lawyers in the country
She was stunned at what he said and responded. “That’s Liam?” Lowering his head, Noah held his cigarette with trembling fingers
It seems that history does have a tendency to repeat itself. Zoe and Noah had no one but each other to rely on. It was all thanks to Liam
too!
After a brief moment, he leaned over and looked at her. “I might’ve spent the last six years in prison, but I’ve never given up on the truth. Several days ago, Mason obtained a piece of reliable information. The secretary who worked for Dad all those years ago was actually Liam’s assistant!”
Leaning back on the seat, Zoe tried to process what she had just heard. It was hard for her to grasp the truth. After all this time, Liam was actually the mastermind behind her family’s downfall. She
shuddered when she remembered how she had trusted him so much for the past few years.
Every time he’d travel to Silvercrest for business purposes, he’d visit her and bring a toy for Yanni. He had even invited her for a cup of coffee when she moved back to Brookesville.
As far as she was concerned, Liam was a trusted friend.
The revelation shook her quite significantly. Then, she leaned on Noah’s shoulder the way she did when they were young and
murmured, “I used to think that my love for Mason would last until the end of time, but it was nothing more than a pipe dream.
“I also thought that Liam was a stand-up guy whom I could trust, but
turns out that he was the entire reason that our family was torn apart! Is there anything or anyone I can trust in, Noah?”
“I don’t know,” Noah murmured gently, “I don’t have an answer for that, Zoe. All I know is that I can only trust in something that I can touch and feel! Whoever sacrifices themselves too much is a fool and will lose the game of life!”
Zoe fell into silence. Leaning on his shoulder, she wept quietly. Today
was her birthday and the day she was reunited with Noah. However, that didn’t change the fact that so many tragedies had happened in the past few years.
They were delighted by the reunion, but saddened by the misfortunes that threatened to overwhelm them.
Then, they talked heart-to-heart into the night.
It was almost nine o’clock when he patted Zoe and said gently,” Yanni’s waiting for you to go home. I’m going to let you go now. We’ll talk again soon.”
Zoe was reluctant to leave. She called out to him in tears, “Noah!”
That put a lump in his throat. After all, he wanted nothing more than to stay with her, but so much had changed since he had been
incarcerated. They didn’t have a choice. There were so many things that they had to do.
In the end, he embraced her and said, “Focus on looking after Yanni and leave Liam to me!”
With that, he got out of the car.
A breeze rushed into the car as the car door opened, bringing the cold in with it. At the next moment, she hopped out of the car as if she sensed something and called out to him, “Noah!”
Stopping in his tracks, he turned around slowly. A complicated look graced his face.
The breeze turned into a strong wind. He stared at her quietly. She was his younger sister, whom he had loved since he was young. He was about to be involved in something dark and sinister and he wanted to keep her out of it. It was better if she stayed by Mason’s side.
After that, Zoe got back into her car.
