Chapter 438
Truth be told, it bothered him a lot.
It was only normal for every man to not want to share the lady he loved, much less someone like Mason.
Zoe watched as he left and lowered her head.
There was something else bothering her.
Otherwise, she could’ve gotten laid with him. His lust was strong, to begin with. Top that off with the fact that he had been abstaining from sex for years, it would’ve been like taking candy from a baby.
It was just that she wasn’t at the top of her game tonight.
Liam’s words haunted her. She was still wondering if Noah really did marry Gwynn. There were so many things that had suddenly piled up on her and made her feel encumbered.
Still, she continued to wait for Mason to come back.
In the end, Deborah ran downstairs and said, looking worried, “Y having a case of rubella, Ms. Zoe. She’s mumbling in her slee Mason asked for you to go up there right now.”
“When did this happen?” Zoe asked as she took brisk steps tow
the manor.
Then, she broke into a run with Deborah in tow. “She was just fine th afternoon, she but threw a little tantrum before she went to sleep. M Mason spent a long time calming her down!”
She felt a shiver down her spine.
It just so happened that Scarlett was coming down the stairs as she was going up. There was a tray with medicines in her hand too.
Stopping her, Zoe said softly, “From this point on, you may not go to the second floor without my say-so, Scarlett. You are to stay away from Yanni and Jamie.”
Scarlett squinted and retorted, “Who are you to give me orders, Ms.
Zoe?”
Zoe was still climbing the stairs as she barked at her, “I’m Mason’s ex- wife and the mother of his children. You, on the other hand, are nobody!”
Tears welled up in Scarlett’s eyes. Fighting them back, her grip on the tray tightened so much that her knuckles went white.
Zoe walked briskly into the master bedroom and saw Jamie sleeping/ on the bed while Mason carried Yanni in her arms.
He was trying to soothe her.
The little girl was caught between being awake and sleeping. She’d be mumbling in her sleep, only to jolt awake and weep quietly. Her face was buried in his chest and tears were hanging off her eyelids, breaking both of her parents’ hearts.
Mason was disheartened to see his little girl like this.
The moment Zoe came into the bedroom, he signaled for her to take over. Then, he pulled out his phone and called Mia, asking her to make a trip there, He said respectfully on the phone, “Yanni must be frightened! We need your help here.”
Zoe was carrying her little girl, trying to soothe her.
Yanni was having trouble falling asleep. Her eyes opened a crack
underneath the ceiling light as she called out to her mommy. At the next moment, she hugged Zoe and started weeping again…
Pressing her cheeks against her little girl’s, she asked him, “Should we send her to the hospital?”
At that moment, any animosity or resentment between them vanished without a trace. Yanni was all that mattered. They couldn’t go through another heart-wrenching episode of almost losing their little girl.
Hanging up the phone, he said lightly, “Mia’s on her way! It seems like someone spooked her real good. She said her mother’s side of the family is really good when it comes to things like this.”
Zoe didn’t say anything about that. She merely carried Yanni in her arms, pacing back and forth, patiently soothing her.
Looking at Deborah, he ordered, “Get Zoe a pair of indoor slippers.’
Deborah nodded and left to do his bidding.
Turning to look at Zoe again, he fell into a trance. Her figure might’ve been as slender as before, but she used to be so weak and vulnerable. Now, look at her. She could carry a six-year-old kid in he arms for this long. A depressing feeling rose in his chest all of a sudden and made him hate himself more than ever.
Deborah was already out of the room. Zoe, Mason, and their kids were the only people in there.
She could sense that he was beating himself up. So, she said quietly, You shouldn’t think that you’re holding me back or dragging me down, Mason. You might assume that you’re giving me a chance to live my life by pushing me away.
“However, I ended up clawing my way through raising both of them by myself all the same! I might come across the greatest guy in my life, but he’d never hold a candle to you, Mason!”
