Lola’s POV

A pack member was killed at the border.

His words kept ringing in my ears and I felt weighed down. If only I had listened to my instincts, it might have been avoided. I couldn’t even protect one person, how was I supposed to protect the whole wolf world?

“There was nothing we could have done, Lola“, Jasmine said sadly through our mindlink. “We’re just getting used to this whole thing, it’s going to take time“, she tried to reassure me but I believed it was my fault.

“Lola? Baby? can you hear me?” Adrian’s voice brought me to the present and I realized that he was starting to pack up the food we did not get to eat.

The moment he started unbuttoning the rest of his buttons, I turned my back on him, not before I got a glimpse of his toned abs. He chuckled and my cheeks became warm with embarrassment. He definitely did it on purpose.

I heard cracking of bone before a wet nose nudged the back of my leg. I turned around slowly and was met a pure black wolf with a darker shade of interchanged green and hazel eyes. I slowly ran my hand through his fur and he purred like a kitten making me chuckle softly.

I’ve never seen a more magnificent wolf and it wasn’t until he started nudging me again that I remembered why we had to go in the first place. I picked his clothes and folded them on top of the basket.

He lowered himself onto the ground and I gently climbed him before adjusting the basket on my laps. He made a worried sound, I patted his head and whispered, “I’m fine. We can go now“, I held onto the fur on the soft part of his neck and he goes off without warning.

It felt so amazing to breeze past the trees very fast. The wind in my hair was amazing and I had to close my eyes because I was getting dizzy a bit. It was an amazing experience.

He took us to the where the body was found, only stopping when we reached there. He picked up his folded clothes with his teeth and came back two minutes later, fully dressed.

His heart was carved out and placed in wooden box that was placed next to him. A warrior came to where we were standing and held out a placard that reeked of blood.

“We found this on his body, Alpha“, he bowed and gave him the placard before moving away from him a bit. Adrian growled and I made to check what was on the placard but he moved away from me.

Adrian gently pried the placard away from my hands and held me close to himself. The rage in me slowly died down replaced by sadness and guilt.
