Chapter 41

The arrival of Maverick created an uncomfortable atmosphere at the scene for a while.
He entered and noticed Sherry standing behind Mateo, who was also staring at him.
Examining his jawline, Maverick said with a twisted smile, “Ms. Wilson has been
observing me,” his words carrying a mysterious meaning.
Sherry quickly looked away, as if she had been burned. “No, I… um…”
“Maverick, when did you meet Sherry?” Mateo asked directly.
Maverick raised an eyebrow. “Wasn’t it the day you introduced her to me?”
“But Sherry said you’ve known each other for a long time,” Mateo pointed out, his
eyebrows slightly furrowed. “So were you lying to me just now?”
Sherry tried to speak but couldn’t find the right words, caught in his gaze.
Maverick touched Mateo on the shoulder and said, “Mateo, you should be more gentle with girls. Connections between people are unpredictable; perhaps we crossed paths
in another place at some point in time.”
His words were vague, and Sherry couldn’t distinguish which parts were true and which
were false.
Mateo took a step forward and positioned himself in front of Sherry, blocking her view
of Maverick. “I’ll have plenty of time to ask you about it after the car show, but Sherry,
one last question: Are you really not going on stage?”
Sherry hesitated, biting her lower lip.
“Mateo, when asking for someone’s assistance, you should be more humble.”
Mateo’s lips tightened. “What if I give you money? How much money do you want? Just
name it, and I’ll give it to you.”
Sherry smirked. “I’ve said it before; I won’t do it even for ten million.”
“Ms. Wilson,” Maverick interrupted her, his voice calm yet commanding. “I understand that you don’t want to compromise your principles, but can you consider it as helping a

colleague? This car exhibition is Mateo’s hard work over the years, and it is also the
most important one among the eight exhibitions. If you refuse monetary
compensation, perhaps we can offer something else, or I can try to contact a cardiac
surgeon from abroad to consult with your uncle.”
His gaze was focused as he spoke, not forceful, but genuine and calming.
This reminded me of Mr. Sniper.
Was he trying to assist Mateo?
“Mr. Morgan, may I ask you a question?” Sherry bit her lip.
“Another question?” Maverick asked, quietly chuckling. “Sure, go ahead.”
“Have you ever been deeply in love with a woman? Where is she now?”
Mateo erupted upon hearing this. “What are you thinking, Sherry? Are you so curious
about my brother’s past love life?”

Sherry stated unequivocally, “I need to confirm some things before deciding whether or
not to go on stage.”
Mateo smirked and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “What do you need to confirm?
Why don’t you just ask my brother if he likes you or wants to be your boyfriend?”
“Mateo!” Maverick’s tone was foreboding. “These are not secrets; if Ms. Wilson is
interested, I can tell her. Yes, I once deeply loved a woman, but she already had an
engagement, so I decided not to bother her and quietly withdrew. Is this satisfactory,
Ms. Wilson?”
Sherry took a deep breath, feeling a great burden lifted from her heart.
She no longer seemed to need to investigate. Maverick was undoubtedly Mr. Sniper.
Her lashes fluttered, and she nodded. “I’ll go change my clothes and makeup now
because I’m getting ready to go on stage.”
“You… Mateo looked surprised at Sherry before turning to Maverick. “No matter what I
say, you won’t agree, but as soon as my brother speaks, you nod. Are you really playing
Sherry sat in front of the dressing table, applying makeup, and said, “Mr. Mateo, please
don’t misunderstand. I have no relationship with Mr. Morgan.”
She was willing to work with Mr. Sniper because he didn’t want to reveal his name.
She didn’t want to make things difficult for Mr. Sniper. She could pretend to be a
stranger in front of others as long as she knew the truth in her heart.
Mateo, on the other hand, felt offended by his own intelligence.
“It’s always about sending you home or asking about your love life, and now you’re
telling me you have nothing to do with Mr. Morgan. Do you think I’m a fool, Sherry?”
Sherry let out a faint sigh. “Mr. Mateo, the company doesn’t require me to report my
relationship status, right?”
“So you admit that you like my brother?”
believe Mr. Morgan is right; when asking for someone’s assistance, it’s best to be
humble. Ordering or using money directly is difficult to persuade people.”
“Okay, Sherry, now you’re lecturing me?” Mateo gripped his hair in frustration and took
deep breaths.
But in the end, he didn’t stay angry. Instead, he stormed out of the backstage area and
into the exhibition hall. He pointed to the wall clock and said to Sherry, “I won’t argue
with you. There are ten minutes left. Figure it out yourself.”
He stormed out.
Maverick stood there for a moment, crossing his arms, and then left, just like Mateo.
Mr. Samuel sighed and approached Sherry, who was still applying her makeup. “For the
first time in his life, Mr. Mateo was speechless. Ms. Wilson, you’re incredible.”
Sherry applied heavy makeup, skipped doing her hair, and hastily changed into a
tight–fitting silver sequin dress. She took her time walking, leaning against the wall for

support.
She wasn’t trying to be spectacular; she was simply trying to reward Mr. Sniper for his
efforts.
Sherry would do anything for him, no matter how difficult it was.
“Hey, have you never worn high heels before, my lady?”
Sherry walked in high heels, almost stumbling, as if she were on stilts. Fortunately,
Samuel stepped forward to help her maintain her balance.
She had never worn such high heels before.

She wondered how female superstars on television could effortlessly walk in high heels
every day.
