Chapter 13
Katerina:
I sat on the edge of the bed as I thought of what Nikolay told me. His words played in my head about letting me go, by meaning, filing and signing the divorce papers. The man didn’t know what played on the issue of doing so, or the consequences that would be following on me if that happened.
I was not allowed to accept a divorce, it was one of the things that my parents have put on me as a condition, and even if we do fight for one, they wouldn’t let me sign the papers without getting money and things that would make me look like some gold digger, something that I wasn’t.
I did try to sleep, but seeing as it was pouring outside, and the loud thunderstorm seemed to keep me awake, I couldn’t really get any rest.
I walked out of the bedroom, choosing to go and watch something if I couldn’t sleep. I could try to make myself something warm, and watch a movie until I’ve almost dozed off. Maybe staying out of the room would actually help me, and watching a movie would distract me from the overthinking that I was
dealing with.
I frowned in confusion when I saw Nikolay sitting on the couch, scrolling through his phone, his eyes were fixed on it. “Can’t sleep?”
My voice startled him, and looking up at me, he frowned. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Are you okay?” He asked me, and I nodded, walking around the couch to face him. He removed. the two pillows that were beside him, silently placing them on the coffee table. I walked toward him, and sat by his side, nodding to answer his question.
“I couldn’t sleep. The thunderstorm kept me awake, and I am guessing that the amount of caffeine that I have in my system also played a role, and you?” I asked, and he sighed, pinching the bridge of
his nose.
“I am guessing that it could be the same reason with me. I figured sit here for a while, maybe I would be able to doze off, but I couldn’t get a shut eye no matter how hard I tried.” He said, making
me smile.
“It seems like it is the two of us on this one.” I said, shaking my head. Nikolay smiled, his smile reaching his eyes. The man wore sweat pants and a white shirt, and putting his phone on the coffee table, he turned to look at me, resting his arm on the backrest of the couch.
“So, considering that you chose to leave the room, what did you plan on doing?” He asked. I curled up on the couch, laying my knee on the backrest as I lay my arm and head over it, looking at him. I shrugged my shoulders in response.
“I was planning on making myself an infusion to drink, something to calra my nerves a bit, then was going to watch a movie until sleep was nice enough to pay a visit. Otherwise, it might have been a whole night kind of nights.” I answered, keeping my eyes on his. “And you?”
“I was reading through my phone, scrolling through the hundreds of messages that I had, reading what was important, getting dumped few times…” I couldn’t help but laugh at that part, and he

chuckled.
“She would understand eventually, you just need to explain the situation to her, and the fact that she would need to pin consideration not to kiss you in public.” I said, shaking my head at the man as I moved my head away from the backrest, and wrapped my arms around myself.
“In her defense, she did warn me about it, but you know, when you’re fighting for something…”
“You really do love her, don’t you?” I asked, stopping him and he nodded.
“It kills me to do this to you, but I honesty do love her a lot. Losing her is not something that I can’t think of dealing with. My heart aches at just the thought of it, but…”
“I understand, but you do know that you’re going to have to fight for her, right? The two of you are. going to have it easy. It seems like you didn’t before, and you won’t. But if you are willing to go through it all. I would be more than willing to help you out with it.” I said, making him frown in
confusion.
“Why?” He asked, and I smiled.
“You are in love, and I am not a woman to stand in the face of love. In her defense as well, I am the intruder here, and that is not something that I want to be. I am better than that, and I grew up to have my dignity; therefore, I will do what it takes to help the two of you be together.” I said, giving him a small smile. He didn’t say a word for a while, and looking at the TV, I nodded, not wanting to keep up with the topic any longer. “Do you want to watch something?”
“Do you have anything in mind?” He asked, and I shook my head. In truth, I didn’t even know if the TV worked, but seeing as he didn’t say that it didn’t, then I assumed that it had something that we
could watch.
“Do you want us to scroll through the channels and see how things go? Or do you want to choose. something online?” I asked, and he shrugged.
“I rarely ever open the TV to begin with, but we can scroll through the channels and see what we find. How about it?” I asked, and he nodded. I got up from the couch and walked toward the remote, and opened the TV. Nikolay kept his eyes on me, and the two of us kept scrolling through a bunch of channels, and it wasn’t until we found an action movie that we stopped.
“Have you watched it before?” I asked, and he shook his head.
“I don’t usually watch movies. I generally don’t have any time to do so, but I don’t mind it.” He said, and I nodded. I curled up on the couch again, and laying my head on the armrest, I kept my eyes
on the screen.
And it wasn’t until I felt a blanket being laid on top of me that I jumped, startled. Nikolay’s eyes met mine, and I couldn’t help the blush as I felt him leaning in, his breath hitting my face before his lips connected with mine. The kiss was gentle, and cupping my cheek, he stopped me from pulling away as I realized that the man was in a relationship.
He pulled away to look at me, and nodding in assurance, my heart raced as I processed what just happened.

“Nikolay…”
“I got dumped, Katerina.” He said, stopping me. “My Anastasia dumped me.”
