Nikolay:
“Nikolay, we have to get Katerina to the hospital.” Anastasia said, looking at
- me.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” I asked, glaring at the woman whose
widened in surprise.

“I came and helped your wife, thank you very much.” She said, snapping back at me. I had to fight back taking my anger out on her as I saw my father lifting my wife in his arms. The fact that she stood up to Katerina was something that I couldn’t understand, but seeing as I had no time to think of it, I chose to allow the topic to slide, for now. The woman could explain herself later, though at this point, I didn’t even know when later would be.
The fact that the man came to the house to begin with was far more disturbing than I could think of describing. And the anger than I felt for him doing so or even thinking that he could was one that I couldn’t just ignore. But for now, I was forced to stay quiet, settling for breaking his face for hurting my wife.
“The ambulance is on the way. She would probably need to stay there for a few days. I don’t know how many kicks the man landed on her stomach or what damage he could have inflicted, but her face is badly injured.” Dad said, holding her in his arms. “As for what Anastasia came here to do. It was me and your mom who called her here. The two of you have a few things to talk about, and considering the fact that you two refuse to be adult enough to discuss anything, then we chose to do that for you. However, right now, we need to take care of Katerina who is need of medical attention. They can take care of her father as well before we file a report of domestic abuse.”
I looked at Katerina who was peacefully asleep in my father’s arms. Her chest rose and fell and she lay her head on his chest as her body bled. I couldn’t help but notice that my father’s once white shirt was now red. I

went to take a step toward her only to frown when dad took a step back.
“Did you know that she filed a report against your mother?
“Yes.” I said, avoiding his eyes. “I was with her when she did it. She filed the report after mom slapped her.”
“Why did she slap her?”
“I do not know. All I do know is that she slapped her, and it was something that I didn’t like. I took her out of the house for that reason as well, but seeing as her father has abused her a lot more severely, I am sure that things would be different in this case.” I said, and dad nodded. Mom walked toward dad and slowly ran her hand over Katerina’s hair. And for the first time since I was a kid, I saw a gentle side that I don’t remember ever seeing from my mom toward any of us. And I wasn’t sure whether it was after what she saw or was it basic remorse, but I could tell that something was different.
“If she needs a lawyer to ensure her protection, then we are going to hire her the best one. As for protection from her father, we will have someone protecting the two of them around the clock. It may be hard to be done eventually, but she would be forced to deal with it. The last thing we need is for him to keep coming every other day, hurting the girl simply because he claimed that he was he father.” Mom said, making me frown in confusion. The fact that he was coming every other day alone was disturbing, and the fact that I didn’t know about this was even more annoying, but then again, I was rarely ever home to even know about such details.
“The security alarms would have your facial recognition, which means that even if you escape this one. If you approach the house again, you would find it surrounded by cops as you are identified as a thief, and I don’t think that the businessman wants to be seen as an abusive father who has hurt his daughter or am I wrong?”
“You are playing a very dangerous game, and it would be one that would lead you all to a messy situation that you would not know how to handle.

Needless to say, even if YOU know how to handle it, his wife, and your daughter–in–law would not be able to handle the pressure.” Her dad said, glaring at mom who laughed.
“Am I now? Was it not you who came and abused the girl? These videos. have been sent to the station, and judging by the call that I got from them a while ago after I was called and informed by them that you entered the house. The house would be surrounded by cops who would see you hurting your daughter, and I don’t think that they would be as sentient as you are hoping that they are.” Mom taunted just as the ambulance arrived. The gates opened, revealing three cops who were letting the ambulance inside, waiting for further orders from mom who nodded..
The man shied back, wanting to run, and as they placed the stretcher on the floor, dad put Katerina to lay on top of it, careful not to hurt her as he did. Her chest rose and fell, and though I could tell that her breathing was weak, I was just thankful that she was alive.
“Boss, we are going to need to get her to the hospital urgently. Her stomach is badly injured and I fear that her womb was affected.” The paramedic said, looking at me. My heart dropped to my stomach, and glaring at her father, the man’s eyes widened in surprise as he heard what was just said.
“What do you mean?” He asked, shaking his head in fear. The man’s face was completely rearranged, but it didn’t seem like he cared at this point. He was more focused on what the paramedic had to say.
“I believe that she could be having some serious internal injuries, and judging by the bruises that have already formed, I can tell that her womb. might be injured. We will talk about the details after a proper X–ray and ultrasound. We would know where we are taking things from there.” The paramedic said, and mom shook her head, looking down at her feet. I couldn’t help but notice Anastasia try to stop herself from smiling. Of course, she would be smiling. At least, this way, she would have a reason to fight me for being with me. And the fact that she was here to begin with. annoyed me, but for now, that was a whole story that I had no time to hear. Her claiming that she was here to speak to me only for us to be

called my security played in my head, and I couldn’t help but worry about. what she was going to tell me.
“Could the injury affect the chances of her having a child?” Anastasia asked, pretending to feel sorry upon hearing the news. I of all people know that this was something that she would be more than just a little happy about. But the paramedics couldn’t read her expression as they looked at me, clearly recognizing that I was Katerina’s husband.
“We cannot determine that until after the ultrasound. For now, we will settle to hoping for the best.” He said, lifting the stretcher as they placed Katerina inside the car. I glared at Anastasia who smiled as she looked at me, shrugging her shoulders.
“What is your fucking problem?” I asked, wrapping my hands around the woman. She smiled at me, her smile sarcastic and not reaching her eyes. If anything. I could tell that she was more than just a little happy. She was proud of what she was doing, and what she just heard. It was something that I knew very well about her.
“Sadly, it is your wife.” She said, nodding at the car which was starting drive off. “As for why I came here, I believe that you would be more than just a little happy with what I would be telling you. You know, especially since it should be a dream come true to you.”
“What do you fucking mean?” I asked, shaking my head in question. At this point, the last thing I needed was to deal with her riddles, and that was something that even she knew. Hell, if anything, she was the ONLY one who would know when I was angry when I was. It was the advantage that I had when I was with her.
The whole world, mine and the one surrounding me, could crumble beneath my feet and she would be the only one to know that it was by simply looking at me. It was one of the reasons why the two of us clicked so easily, and it sickened me that she was using it to her advantage right
now.

thing of her life after I had rejected touching her the way that I did made my chest ache, and though I knew that I did it to keep her safe. The way she looked at me broke my heart and soul for her as she shook her head, clearly not believing what I was saying.
Her scream when I left the bedroom was one that broke my heart, and though I didn’t have the courage to go inside and face her, her words. playing back in my head as I stood by the door, breaking because of how much I hurt her.
“You compared me to a woman who has abused you, and has abused me by laying a hand on me in front of you. It wasn’t something that you heard, no, you knew that she did it. Your mother had men following us when the two of us lived at the hotel to tell her where the two of us were, did you know that? Of course, you didn’t. Did I go ahead telling you to do something against her? No, I didn’t. I swallowed my pride, I swallowed the pain and fear that I felt, and came back to the hotel, telling you that we had to come back. Did I give you my reasons? Question you why this was happening? Say anything that would disrupt your peace? No, no, and no. But since I am your nightmare, go to the woman of your dreams and get the fuck out of here. I no longer want you to think that you can touch me because this time, I don’t want you to.”
I didn’t know how I was to redeem what I did to her as I recalled how she looked at me. The pain that was in her eyes was enough to make my chest. ache more than I ever thought it would for a woman, and that was something that no one, not even I, ever expected when it came to marrying her. If anything, I always expected marrying her to be so easy.
No strings attached, and a simple marriage that was to benefit me and my position, both in my family and my work life. But things turned out being different, and though there were no feelings, not direct ones that I could officially announce, I knew and could tell that there were feelings that I did not find myself wanting to resent, and now, we were way far behind the no strings phase.
Her words played in my head as I looked at my parents who were darker than hell toward one another. The pair could sit on one table and not say a

word for days, and even if they did, it was not often a nice word where they complimented or showed their love to one another. If anything, they were harsh words that no man or woman would want to hear.
“If you want us to end up like them, then we are starting in the right direction. I am telling you this now to keep in your head. But I want you to understand that I don’t want a child that would live in an abusive family.” In truth, even I didn’t want our child to live in an abusive family, but judging by what the paramedic just said, it would be a miracle if we had a child to begin with.
However, at this point, this wasn’t what shook my ground as Anastasia looed at me, reminding me of her presence, something that I momentarily forgot as I looked at the ambulance driving off. Normally, she would have had an escort, and that escort would have been me, I just didn’t have the guts to even look at her after what I saw her dealing it. It was something that I lead her to living through, and no matter how hard I wanted to deny it, I couldn’t. why? Because I knew that I could have stopped it somehow, but I didn’t. if anything, it was my fault that she was living through a life that she despised every day. Whether it was her family or mine.
Anastasia’s eyes were fixed on me, clearly filled with light as she grew excited about what she was going to tell me. Whatever it was, I could tell that it wasn’t something that I was going to like. Her excitement told me that it was something that would break me inside, and though I knew that she would be happier seeing me broken right now. I broke her, why wouldn’t she be returning the favor, right?
The number of people that I managed to break in a short span of time sickened even me, and the fact that I never really did stop myself from doing so, nor did I see myself as wrong in doing so. Maybe it was the way that I was raised to see that everyone around was always wrong, or maybe it was me simply being selfish.
But I knew for fact that neither one of the women, Katerina or Anastasia, deserved to be as hurt as they were from me. One woman took me in despite everything and was willing to fight by my side until the end. I

chose to drop her before we even took off. And the other, the woman that I love, I chose to abandon for money. It killed me to admit, and I wouldn’t be able to look at her if she heard this from me, but for money, I chose to abandon her. For money, I chose to ignore the fact that I loved her, and for money, I married Katerina. An innocent woman who had nothing in her hands but her pride and name. I married and ruined.
Anastasia smiled at me, and bit her bottom lip, clearly growing more fidgety and excited about what she was going to tell me. Her eyes had a nice glow in them, one that I haven’t seen in years, and despite looking as tired as she was, she seemed to be happy, happier even, more proud of an
achievement‘ that she made, whatever that was anyway.
“Congratulations, Nikolay…” Anastasia said, taking my hand in hers as she put it on her stomach. “The two of us are going to become parents.”
