Zoe clenched her fists on the way to the hospital. She didn’t ask Mason anything.
The hallway in the hospital felt endless. She could almost hear a lady crying when she was walking down it. There was a trace of twisted sorrow in the lady’s voice. She recognized it, but it also felt as if she had never heard it before.
She picked up her pace.
She was about to open the door when Mason stood behind her and said with a hushed voice, “Nellie’s men ruined her right ear. We found her in an abandoned warehouse.”
Tears welled up in her eyes and her hand, which was holding the door handle, started trembling uncontrollably. She didn’t open the door until after a long time.
Leslie, as well as his fiancee, were already in the ward.
Ella was sitting on the bed. She was so scrawny that it distorted her beauty. She wasn’t looking at Leslie and his fiancee, nor was she listening to what they were saying. That was because she couldn’t hear them.
She looked like a husk of her former self. There wasn’t any light in her eyes until she saw Zoe walking in.

Leslie was shivering all over after he heard what she said.
Looking at Ella, he realized how scrawny she was. She was as thin as a rake. His mind began to wander. Not long ago, she was full of life and lay underneath him. She even flirted with him and claimed that she was going to have sex with another man.

Tears flowed down her cheeks as he touched her. “Regretting it now, are we? Well. Too late! You got on my nerves!” With that, he zipped his pants and left without so much as checking on her.
That night, Leslie went to the most popular nightclub and had his way with several minor celebrities as Nellie pulled herself together and returned to her family.
Her father, Bartholomew Lynch, slapped her so hard that she could hear ringing in her ear. He proceeded to lecture her.
“How are you this stupid? Do you know the kind of money both of our families have invested in this project? You backed Lesie into a comer over some insignificant lady. How are you supposed to live the rest of your life with him?”
Then, he tossed a pile of erotic pictures at her. “Look at this. This is his answer to your petty actions! Do you really think people like us can find true love in an arranged marriage? Do you really think there’s a man who’d remain loyal to you until he dies of old age? Your level of stupidity is beyond help”
She looked at the pictures and said, trembling “He did it for her.”
Bartholomew sneered. It isn’t about you hurting his lover as much as it is about you hurting his pride and authority as a man. This is his Achilles heel. Just wait until he takes control of the Schmict family. He’s going to come after us first and foremost.’
