Chapter 216

Zoe rushed back home. True enough, Sherry wasn’t feeling well. It hadn’t been eating for the whole day. Not even its favorite snack or toy could lift its spirits.

Mia was wracked with worry. “Is it sick? I’ll get changed and go to the vet with you. I’m afraid it’ll get worse if we drag this out.”

She carried the puppy, thought about it, and said, “Given Dad’s condition, we can’t afford to leave him alone. I’ll run Sherry by the vet myself! I’m thinking about hiring a private nurse. That’ll make your life easier, too, Mia.”

Mia pondered on it and said, “That’s a good idea! It’s late, so watch out and stay safe.”

Gordon came out of his room just as she was going out and rubbed the puppy’s head. He said to Mia when his daughter had left, “You’ve always given that puppy the stink eye, but you’re more concerned. about it than the rest of us when something happens!”.

She went to the kitchen to pour him a glass of water and medicine. Moments later, he heard her voice from the kitchen, “Look who’s

talking.”

He let out a hearty laugh.

Zoe arrived at Furry Friends Wellness Center. The vet was giving poor Sherry a check-over while Zoe kept it company. It was very clingy, resting its head on her palm and looking at her with pitiable eyes.

Then, the glass door was pushed open and she heard the receptionist gasp, “It’s you, Mr. Mason!”

Mr. Mason?

Surprised, she turned and looked at the door. It was really him.

It was the middle of the night, he probably came here in a hurry because his outfit was put together haphazardly. He wore a black shirt and long pants, together with a black coat. However, it did. nothing to diminish his stunning looks.

Walking over to her, he explained, I used my phone number when I registered Sherry here. So, I received a message when you checked Sherry in here.”

Patting the puppy’s head lightly, she said softly, “You can always ignore it.”

She was giving him the cold shoulder, but Sherry did the exact opposite. As soon as it saw Mason, it yapped twice and gave him a look that said it wanted to be carried.

Running his fingers through its fur gently, he said in a deep voice, think I miss it a little!”

Stop acting lovey-dovey, the vet thought to himself.

Were they really divorced?

Once the examination was over, the vet said, “It isn’t anything serious! Sherry was just having its period because it was ready for mating. Symptoms include low appetite and a lack of interest in everything. The question is whether you want to spay it. It can wait for another couple of months.”

Mason merely looked at her.

She knew it was better to spay a pet, but Sherry was just a puppy, for Heaven’s sake. She just didn’t have the heart to do it!

He could tell she was reluctant to do it, so he told the vet, “I’ll talk it

over with its mommy! We might let it give birth to a puppy before spaying it!”

The vet nodded and told them some do’s and don’ts before letting them go.

It was hard to hail a cab at this time of night. So, Mason pulled over, opened the car door of the passenger seat, and said to Zoe, who was standing out in the cold, “Get in!”

She turned down his offer, claiming that it wasn’t appropriate.

Looking at her quietly for a brief moment, he chuckled, “You’re overthinking it. I’m just concerned about Sherry! I’ll buy some diapers for it since it’s having a period. We can’t just let it crawl around, dripping blood all the time!

“Don’t worry, Zoe. I won’t do anything unseemly to you.”

The late night in spring was very cold, indeed. She was concerned about the puppy as well. So, she sat in the passenger seat. He grabbed some tissue and put it under its buttocks while she was buckling up. His eyes were dark when he said, “It’s going to bleed on your coat!”

That was too much, Zoe thought.

She made a point to respond coldly, “Didn’t you say you wanted to buy some diapers?”

He stopped bothering her, sat upright, and stepped on the gas pedal.

They arrived at a pet shop in about ten minutes. She was about to get out of the car, but he stopped her and said, “It’s cold outside. Let me do it!”
