Chapter 235
Zoe knew what Mason wanted to talk about in this phone call! She didn’t want to let Mia know about it, so she excused herself before
e answered it outside.
Even the tightly closed window couldn’t hold off the bitter coldness of the night. The chilling wind seeped in through the crack of the window at the end of the hallway and hit her squarely in the face.
With that said, it was nothing compared to her conversation with Masón.
Over the phone, his voice was soft yet heavy with intention. “You should know what the Schmidts’ next move is! I’m the only one who can help you now, Zoe! Ella has to become one of the Lockwoods if you want Langston to back off!”
Numb, Zoe asked, “Can you please help me?”
After a brief moment of silence, his voice sounded significantly deeper than earlier when he said, “I told you. I’m not a charitable man! I think you know that I won’t intervene in Leslie and Ella’s matters if you’re not in the picture.”
Of course, she knew that.
She had been married to him for several years. She knew him all too well.
Suppressing the bitterness in her heart, she said softly, “The other night, you told me that I’ll know how important power is when I lose more people I care about. You said that I’d be nothing the moment I leave your side!”
He didn’t say anything back to her. He knew what her choice was

now, but she didn’t say it out loud. It was probably because she was angry!
By now, she had had a taste of how well another man would treat her. She began to have feelings for Cecil. There was no way she would be remotely happy about going back to Mason’s side, but that was how e was. It was unfair. She had to make some compromises for Ella!
It didn’t feel like he had won, though. It bugged him that someone else had a spot in her heart.
He even thought about what the two of them would do in hidden corners of the hospital when there was no one around. Perhaps they would hug and kiss each other and be eager to have sex with each other. Sometimes, enjoying physical pleasure was the best way to deal with stress.
Both of them were silent when Mia raced toward her frantically. She cried out to Zoe, “Something happened to Ella!”
Zoe couldn’t be bothered with her phone call with Mason now. She ran back to Ella’s ward and was shocked by the sight.
Somebody had broken open the door and removed her oxygen mask. There was a pillow that was left haphazardly by her head. From the looks of it, somebody had tried to smother Ella.
She was almost dead!
The nurses and doctors put the oxygen mask back on hurriedly and examined her. It was a relief when they said she was fine.
Zoe was still reeling with fear. Falling on her knees, she said with a trembling voice, “I was so scared!”
All Ella did was lie there motionlessly.
Mia blamed herself. She felt extremely guilty.

“It’s my fault! Somebody did this the moment I went to the restroom. If I hadn’t taken my sweet time with it, then this wouldn’t have happened!”
Zoe murmured, “This is not your fault, Mia! If they intended to kill her, they’ll take any opportunity they can get!”
Mia was heartbroken for Ella. “She and Leslie were never really a couple. They should’ve just let her go! Why would they do this to her? Her life is hard enough as it is!”
Zoe had nothing to say about that. She merely stared at Ella. She darednot even blink as she was afraid that she might lose her the second she did.
The long, dark night finally gave way to dawn.
Zoe was standing by the window in the ward and watched as a thin layer of mist covered it, giving a hazy and surreal look to everything outside. However, she still saw Cecil.
He was moving about, wearing a lab coat.
Then, he seemingly noticed her gaze and raised his eyes to look at her. Their eyes met. Through the hazy window, she could just make out that he was smiling at her warmly.
