Chapter 267

Mason was working in his company and he was signing the last document. Then, he closed it and tried to ask Ava casually, “Do you know about any restaurant that’s atmospheric and suitable for a date?”

She gave it some thought before responding, “It depends on which lady you’re taking with you. If it’s Ms. Zoe, then I’d recommend the Mexican restaurant in Westholme. If it’s Gabriela, however, it’d be wise to pick a more secluded spot.

His face turned sour at what she said.

Rising, he took a coat and said lightly, “There’s nothing between me and Gabriela.”

Holding the documents in front of her chest, she followed him and said, “I heard that she picked a bone with you at your manor. A word of advice, Mr. Mason. Don’t think you’re in the clear just yet. After all, Ms. Zoe hardly made a fuss over it.”

She meant every word she said.

He stood in front of the elevator and watched the number on the screen go up. He remained quiet, but his heart sank!

Getting into the car, he was about to call Zoe and ask her out for dinner. However, he got a call from Lisa. Apparently, Barbara wasn’t doing so well and she was asking him to check on her.

“I don’t think she’s going to make it past this winter! I know you’re not going to like what I say, but it’s time we prepare for it!”

Gripping the phone, he leaned back on the seat and rubbed his

eyebrows. He didn’t respond for a long time.

“We’ll talk about it when I’m there!”

Half an hour later, a black Rolls-Royce pulled into Lockwood Manor. It circled the courtyard once before parking. Mason got out of the car and saw a company car that belonged to Lockwood Hospital. A doctor must’ve come here to hook Barbara up to an IV drip.

His eyes grew darker.

He walked into the living room and ran into a servant who was coming downstairs. She saw him and said lightly, “Ms. Barbara’s looking better after a nap. She just said that she missed you and Ms. Zoe!”

This servant, Mildred, was an old lady who had served Barbara

closely. She wiped her tears and said, “She missed you guys so much, but she’s afraid her poor health will bring bad luck to Ms. Zoe’s recent pregnancy. She’d even stop us from calling you, Mr. Mason.”

What she said distressed him more.

Arriving at Barbara’s room, he realized her condition was worse than before. Her sickly thin hands were full of needle marks and she looked so weak. She had clearly been bedridden for a long time.

Sitting by her bed, he called out to her gently.

In her dazed mind, Barbara made a mistake and saw him as someone else. She cried out, “It’s you, Westley! Where have you been all this time?”

Mason felt a sharp pain in his heart.

Barbara’s health had gotten worse over the years. Her age certainly had something to do with it, but she was also haunted by her son’s departure. It had impacted her greatly and slowly ate her up inside as time went by.

Brushing her white hair gently, he said softly, “I’m Mason.”

This time, Barbara looked at him more carefully and realized it was Mason all along! It was her grandson. Westley’s son.

At that moment, Mildred came in with a bowl of herbal soup and tried to convince Barbara to drink it. “Mr. Mason came all the way here to feed you the herbal soup. So, you can’t act like a child and refuse to eat it. Finish the soup and you’ll be able to see your great-grandchild!”

He took the bowl and helped Barbara lean on the headboard. Then, he said softly, “The baby’s probably a girl. I’m sure she’s going to be just as adorable as Zoe.”

She felt better after hearing the news, but she was still worried about her grandson. She said, “Women tend to be temperamental when they’re pregnant! Make sure you treat her better than you’ve ever done. No one’s going to feel sorry for you if you lose her again!”
