I Refuse to Divorce! by Light Breeze Chapter 285

Chapter 285

Silence hung over the presidential suite.

Lisa pondered a little before saying, “I’ll take care of Yanni for the time being! She’s in no condition to take care of the baby, anyway!”

Then, someone opened the suite’s door.

Layla stood at the door with tears in her eyes. She came in and went on her knees before Mason.

She said tearfully, “It’s my fault, Mr. Mason. I picked up the call in the study because I was worried it might disturb Ms. Zoe’s rest that day. However, I didn’t understand what the person on the other end of the phone was saying and I had something on my mind too. So, I hung up.

“Then, I forgot to tell Ms. Zoe about t. I swear, I’m the one who picked up the phone that day. Ms. Zoe didn’t mean to keep it from you! She’s innocent. It was my fault!”

Layla was old and she had worked in his manor for a long time. Zoe had been treating her rather well all this time. She was so guilty and frantic over her own actions that she started slapping both of her

cheeks.

She cried as she said, “You wouldn’t have misunderstood Ms. Zoe if it wasn’t for me, Mr. Mason. She wouldn’t have had to suffer this much!” She didn’t hold anything back as she slapped herself again.

Her face became as red as blood after she had slapped herself more

than a dozen times.

Standing beneath the fluorescent light, Mason’s face was drained of color.

He couldn’t accept it. He was the one who misunderstood Zoe. She

had begged him pitifully that day, yanking at his sleeves. She was trying to make him stay, but he humiliated her and pushed her away.

He couldn’t imagine how hopeless she felt when he left.

Lowering his head, he stared at Yanni and thought to himself. How disappointed was she when she was delivering his baby?

Layla hadn’t stopped slapping herself. Lisa went on to lecture her a little before turning on Mason, “It doesn’t matter what happened. You can’t possibly think Lilith is more important than Zoe. You’ve stepped over the line this time, Mason!”

He knew that better than anyone. The reason he treated Zoe this harshly and coldly was because he loved her, but he couldn’t have her. To some extent, he wanted to get back at her for saying that she felt sick having sex with him.

Never for a moment had he thought that Lilith meant more to him

than she did.

After a brief silence, he said softly, “Send Yanni to my place tonight. Find a couple of private nurses who have experience taking care of newborns!”

Shocked, Lisa asked, “What about you? Where are you going?”

However, he had already started walking towards the door. His voice was hoarse and miserable when he spoke.

“I’m going to look for Zoe.”

It was midnight by the time he found her.

Zoe was taking a stroll in the night. Her clothes were hanging loosely about her and her face was pale as a ghost.

It had only been a few days since he last saw her, but she looked so

haggard.

All of a sudden, she saw him.

He was sitting in the car while she was walking in the night. They merely hadn’t seen each other for a week, but it felt as if everything had changed in that short time. They were supposed to be husband and wife, but they didn’t have anything to say to each other at that moment!

She was silent because she had mourned their relationship. She had nothing to say to him because she had buried her love for him.

It was all over…

She was gazing at him in an unperturbed and unfeeling manner. Not even a flicker of emotion was in her eyes!

Tearing her gaze away, she walked past his car and straight to her place.

Mason leaped out of the car and took off his coat, intending to put it on for her. Little did he know Zoe would take a step back.

There wasn’t the slightest emotion in her eyes when she stared at him under the pale moonlight. Her voice was soft, “Don’t come any closer, Mason! I don’t need your affection. Save it for Lilith!”

With that, she turned and left.

She didn’t make it more than two steps before he grabbed her and said in a husky voice, “I’ll appeal to the court for Noah! I’ll make it up to you, Zoe!”

He thought she’d shout at him and slap him, as she normally would

have.

However, she barely reacted.
