It was eight o’clock in the night by the time Mason was done with the video conference. Instead of going back to the bedroom, he walked over to the window in the study and smoked a couple of cigarettes. A wisp of smoke hung in the air,
covering the study with a greenish hue.
Mist covered the entire window. He reached out and wiped the glass, only to find four inches thick of pockets of snow gathered on the ground. It snowed particularly heavily this winter, it seemed.
With a cigarette between his fingers, he breathed out wisps of smoke as he stared out the window with deep, profound eyes. He stood there like that until he finished smoking. Then, he snuffed out the cigarette and left the study.
The first thing he saw was the company yearbook when he stepped into the private lounge. It was just laid there, looking conspicuous. He flipped through it and saw the picture where he stood shoulder to shoulder with Eira. It’d be pushing it to claim that there was nothing between them.
Zoe had probably seen it, but if she did, she didn’t behave any differently.
Closing the yearbook, he walked into the bedroom. There was a heavy snowstorm out there. She was carrying Yanni by the window, feeding her formula. He looked at them quietly for a while before unbuttoning his shirt and asking lightly, “Why aren’t you breastfeeding her?”
The fact was, she had stopped breastfeeding Yanni for half a month now. He just wasn’t aware of it until now. She responded softly, “I’ve been taking sleeping pills lately. So, I can’t breastfeed her anymore.”
Normally, people who were going through depression sent signals to the people around them. Right now, that was what she was doing.
However, he was giving her the cold shoulder. So, he didn’t think too much about it. Walking over, he patted Yanni and said, “I guess formulas aren’t that bad, either.”
She blinked in a daze, not saying anything.
Disinterested, he walked straight into the bathroom and took a shower. He thought
about her coldness and how difficult it was to maintain a marriage like this Perhaps. Zoe was right. He should just do both of them a favor and cut her loose.
He just needed more time to think about it.
He decided to sleep in the bedroom tonight. He was at the top of his game in life and
Eira admired him, which gave him a sense of triumph over Zoe, who was sickly thin
and dispirited.
Both of them slept on the same bed. It was so quiet in the bedroom that they could hear snow falling outside. She couldn’t sleep. So, she asked him softly, “When are we
going to divorce, Mason? Haven’t you found yourself a new lady?”
He remained quiet for a long time in the darkness before responding. “Do you think
that picture meant anything?”
Pursing her lips, she decided to drop it. He always had an excuse for everything.
such as blaming it on their poor relationship and justifying his little plaything that
way. He might even say that he hadn’t had sex with her.
She could do without listening to these lame excuses.
Burying her scrawny cheeks in the white pillow, she said ever so softly, “I heard that
you’ve been stirring up trouble with Terrence, but I’m willing to guess you’re not
after him. Instead, you’re trying to make Rosemary’s life miserable!”
Looking at the crystal chandelier on the ceiling, he turned his head to the side after
a brief moment and asked, “Did Ava say something?”
She didn’t answer him. So, he pressed, “Are you pleading for her?”
The truth was, she was indebted to Rosemary and she did intend to plead for her.
Although she herself was trapped in a conundrum, she’d hate to see Rosemary
suffering Mason’s wrath because of how Farley acted toward her.
After all, Rosemary didn’t exactly have an easy life herself!
Looking at him, she said gently, “You don’t have to put pressure on Rosemary. She
didn’t mean to do anything!”
He was about to say something when his phone rang.
It was Eira.

Normally, he wouldn’t have answered the call. However, things were a little
different today. Perhaps it was the snowstorm out there or the fact that he was upset at Zoe for pleading for Rosemary. Either way, he picked up the phone, stood up, and said lightly, “I’ll be in the study.”
