Chapter 310
Zoe was lying on the bed in the Lockwood Hospital. The doctors managed to pull her back from the dead, but she was still very weak and needed to stay in the hospital for further observation.
Standing by the window, Mason watched the gathered snow on top of the tree
branches.
The doctor said softly from behind him, “Ms. Zoe took more than twenty sleeping pills. It was probably a suicide attempt brought on by her postpartum depression. I suggest you let her go through the psychotherapy and keep her away from the source of her distress. That should help her kick off the depression sooner.”
After a brief moment, he responded lightly, “Okay.”
Then, the doctor left.
Turning around, Mason looked at Zoe who was lying quietly on the bed. He hadn’t stopped trembling since he found her unconscious in their bedroom.
She almost died. If he had come home half an hour later, then she might very well
have crossed over onto the other side and Yanni would’ve been motherless.
All of a sudden, tears started filling in his eyes.
It was two in the afternoon when Zoe came to. The sunlight shone through the
window and fell on her face. It felt warm, almost as if she had returned to the mortal
world.
Mason was sitting on the couch at the side. Resting his elbows on his knees, he
crossed his fingers and stared at her with his deep, profound eyes. “Awake, are you? You took more than twenty sleeping pills.”
As a matter of fact, she remembered it vividly. She felt this intense helplessness. She wrestled with herself but ended up choosing to take her life anyway.
Then, she said softly, “We need to talk, Mason.”
He remained quiet and didn’t respond to her.
Averting her gaze, she stared at the ceiling and said serenely, “We have to divorce. I can’t deny that I couldn’t move on from that incident and I don’t think I will for the rest of my life. It’s honestly pointless for us to keep going on! More to the point, it was a mistake for us to get married to begin with.
“I don’t think you’re to be blamed now because you had no obligation to help me!
“The least we can do is part on good terms. Think of it this way. You’re doing Yanni a favor by setting me free and giving yourself another shot at marriage. Do you deny that you haven’t been happy for the past few months, Mason?”
He didn’t answer her immediately. Instead, he merely sat there and pondered on it for a long time. There were a lot of happy and heartbreaking moments. All of them were engraved in his memory. However, Zoe was right when she said that he hadn’t been happy for the past few months. In fact, it was the same for her as well.
She wasn’t happy with him and he was sick of trying to put things right!
Perhaps he should agree to the divorce. In fact, he probably shouldn’t have tried to make the relationship work out after their first divorce. What was lost once could never be found again, even if he forced it!
After a long and hard consideration, he leaned back on the couch. There were tears in his eyes when he broke the silence, “I didn’t do anything with Eira last night, Zoe! It’s because I knew, deep down, that you’re the one I love.
“However, I can’t deny that my heart stirred when I played the vinyl. Something deep within me resonated with Méditation. The sentiments in the melody helped calm my aching heart. That’s why I kept looking after Lilith and hurt you over and over again!
“I’ll agree to the divorce!
“However, the prerequisite condition is that you must recover from depression. I can’t afford to tarnish Lockwood Corporation’s reputation and Yanni can’t have a mother who is mentally ill!
“I’ll put Yanni in your custody and let you raise her when you’re fully recovered. Also, she has to be the sole successor to my company, unless we have a son in the
future.”
Somehow, he found it hard to believe that they’d have a son.
Now that he no longer loved her, his tone was aloof and distant when he talked about the divorce, much like his past demeanor.
Zoe didn’t play nice, either. Lying down quietly, she insisted, “She’s not going to be anyone’s successor! What I want is her and nothing else! I’ll recover as soon as I leave you with her by my side.”
