Mason didn’t push her away immediately. Instead, he lowered his head and looked at her. She resembled Zoe a little and reminded him of when his wife was a young lady She, too, had snuck up on him, hugged him, and said with a jovial voice, “I love you, Mason Will you be my boyfriend? I’m packed full of qualities you want, I swear!”
Then, she proceeded to name the qualities, only to find that she was drawing a blank.
After a brief moment, he pushed Eira away and said lightly, “I’m a married man!”
Rejected, Eira’s face turned red as she bit her lips and murmured, “I know my place! I won’t come between you and your family. I won’t ask for much the way Lilith did,
either. I’m content with what you give me.”
She was contented with him accompanying her a little, just like he did tonight.
In fact, she didn’t have to put everything out there. Mason was perfectly aware of
her crush on him. He could choose to ignore her, but he came eventually.

At the next moment, he got into his car, ignoring her. Eira stopped him as he was about to close the car door and cried out with trembling lips, “I’ll find the vinyl for you as soon as possible, Mr. Mason. You can count on me.”
He nodded lightly before driving away.
Somewhere on the road, he noticed a cup of Starbucks coffee with a cutesy sticker on it. He touched it and found that it was still warm. Eira probably bought it for him.

It was six o’clock in the morning by the time he went back to the manor.

Taking off his coal, Mason asked, la Zoe up? Did Yanni make a fuss in the night?”

He smiled lightly in response. Then, he climbed upstairs, feeling uplifted.
As he opened the bedroom door, he thought to himself. Zoe probably wouldn’t even care that he hadn’t been back for the whole night. After all, it was a new norm for her to treat him coldly.
Dawn cast a dim light into his bedroom. It was very quiet in there.
She was still asleep, but Yanni had woken up. She was looking at her surroundings. Her black eyes were full of innocence and naivety, looking all the more adorable.
Leaning close, he planted a kiss on her cheeks and changed her diaper. Yanni
opened her mouth. It was a sign that she was hungry, so he carried her and went to
make some milk for her.
His baby’s appetite had grown bigger lately and he wasn’t sure how much milk he
should make for her. With his back turned to Zoe, he asked, “How much milk does
she drink lately? Is four ounces enough?”
However, there was no reply..
He asked again, “Zoe?”

All he got in response was dead silence. Blinking his gently, he abruptly
recalled that there was a bottle rolling on the floor when he came in earlier. He had
thought that it was one of Yanni’s toys.
Setting down the milk bottle slowly, he proceeded to put his baby back in her crib.
That sent Yanni into an instant wailing and her cries were deafening.
He paid her no attention.

Taking steps to the bed, he leaned over and switched on the night light. Zoe was lying on the bed quietly and her face was completely devoid of colors. There were two sleeping pills in the heart of her palm.
