Chapter 383
Mason had been holding his breath for her answer for the entire day. He hadn’t expected her to reject him and push him away.
His heart sank at what she said, but he didn’t respond to this matter. Today was her birthday. So, he told her that she’d find the gifts from her friends and business associates in the fitting room.
She didn’t want to kill the mood entirely, so she forced a smile and said, “I’ll open them up after I’ve taken a shower!”
Pulling her toward him, he ran his hands across her dress provocatively and said in a husky voice, “Let’s shower together!”
However, she rejected him. “I’m on my period!”
He stared at her intensely before swooping her up and carrying her into the bathroom. Needless to say, he wasn’t about to force himself on her when she was having a period. Again, it was her birthday today. All he ever wanted was to make her happy.
What he didn’t know was that the better he treated her, the guiltier she got. With that said, she didn’t regret her decision one bit.
Sometimes, losing someone’s heart once meant losing her forever!
After the shower, she still found it hard to sleep. So, she decided to unwrap the gifts she had received instead. Some of the gifts were exactly to her liking, such as the silk scarf from Rosemary, while the others she felt were just adequate.
The last gift she unwrapped was an exquisite sterling silver bracelet.
It took less than a second to guess who gave it to her as a gift. After all, not many people in Brookesville could afford such a highly expensive gift.
It must
have been from Lisa.
Zoe was still stunned when Mason walked into the fitting room and saw the bracelet. Taking it away from her, he studied it for a second and guessed who was behind this gift. Tossing it aside casually, he said softly, “If you don’t like it, I’ll have someone send it back to her
tomorrow.”
She raised her eyes and looked at him.
Both of them were thrown back to the night when she was stranded in the rehabilitation center, hoping against hope that someone would save her from the cruel torture. She was waited two weeks for him to
rescue her from that hellhole.
By the time he finally swung by to save her, she was already on the brink of madness and death.
It was a trauma she could never recover from.
To his credit, Mason didn’t avoid her gaze. Instead, he crouched and ran his hands over her fair cheeks and said sincerely, “Forgive me, Zoe.”
A somber expression crept up his face. He realized that even if she was to fall in love with him someday, she’d still never forgive him over this.
After all, love and hate were two sides of the same coin. Nobody sail that she couldn’t love and hate him at the same time.
Eventually, dawn came.
Mason sat up and stared at both Zoe and Yanni quietly. They were the people he cherished the most in the world.
After a brief moment, he stood up and headed into the study. A
medical document was laid on his desk. It detailed the fact that there
was another way to alleviate Yanni of her current condition.
Aside from using a newborn infant’s cord blood, medical practitioners could rewrite the DNA of an immediate family member’s bone
marrow. Then, they could transplant the modified bone marrow into Yanni’s body and treat her that way.
There was a catch, though. If they extracted the bone marrow one too many times from a donor, then it could potentially result in death or permanent disability.
He and Zoe were the only ones who could be donors.
she did
Needless to say, he would never let Zoe do it. In fact, he wouldn’t even let her know about this alternative way to save Yanni. fail in getting her pregnant, then he’d donate his bone marrow to his little girl.
He used to think that the universe had mistreated him by giving him such a cruel childhood. Then, he blamed the universe for making him miss out on Zoe.
Now, however, he was relieved and grateful.
Zoe used to love him with a deep passion. Although she hated him deeply and blamed him for what happened, but he could still sense that she harbored some feelings for him. Her heart still stirred for him.
That was more than he could’ve asked for!
It took him some time, but he came to realize that loving someone didn’t necessarily mean he had to make her his. Instead, it was about making her happy.
Staring at the document quietly, he gripped a pen and signed his name. He was set to be t
donor two months later.
