Chapter 384
Dawn broke over the city.
Mason drove back to Lockwood Manor. The security guard was dumbfounded when he opened the gate and saw his car. After all, Mason hadn’t been back there for three years. Moments later, the black Bentley pulled into the premises.
He got out of the car and closed the door before sweeping his eyes
across the manor.
The place had been deprived of its masters and mistresses for far too long and had lost its former warming sensation. Instead, a lifelessness surrounded the manor now. It was depressingly ironic, considering Barbara had loved making the place lively when she was still around.
The servants hadn’t woken up yet.
Walking into the living room, his leather shoes stepped on the unblemished floor and made a crisp tapping sound that reverberated in the room, further accentuating its emptiness.
Barbara’s portrait could be found on the home altar, smiling affectionately.
Running his fingers across her picture longingly, he murmured, ”
Westley’s back. He seems fine, too. You can finally rest in peace now, Grandma!”
His words were met with a silent smile from her portrait. After all, she had moved on to a better place. He felt a lump in his throat.
Offering a prayer to his grandma, he asked her to look after Yanni so his little girl could live a long, happy life. Looking at the picture, he
said with a broken voice, “I believe you’ll support my
that right, Grandma?”
“Mason!”
Kooooo decision. Isn’t
Lisa came running down from the second floor. Then, she stood still and stared at him, gobsmacked. She couldn’t believe that he was back here, at last. Her voice was trembling as she struggled to keep her excitement in check.
Raising his eyes, he glanced at her. He was comparatively colder, regarding her the way he would a stranger.
Putting down his grandma’s picture, he said, “Don’t bother Zoe ever again! She hasn’t even forgiven me, much less someone like you…”
She was stunned for a moment, before crying into her hands. “Why won’t you forgive me, Mason? I knew what I did was wrong all those years ago, but I genuinely care about Yanni now. Hell, I care about Zoe from the bottom of my heart too!”
He watched as his mother wailed. He had rarely seen his mother in such a pathetic state. She had always been cold, distant, and unforgiving. It turned out she had grown soft with age.
He said gently, “You had it coming!”
With that, he turned and left.
Lisa continued to cry in a gut-wrenching manner. “Are you going to abandon me and leave me alone until I die from old age? Are you going to do the same thing Westley did to me? It’s so lonely here, Mason. I don’t even have anyone to talk to in this sorry place.”
He could feel tears starting to build up in his eyes, but he kept suppressing his urge to cry over and over again, before turning around to look at her.
He didn’t go soft on his mother. Instead, he gave her the cold, hard
truth. “If you’re really that lonely, then you can find yoursen some another man to love! It’ll make the rest of your life that much more. bearable…”
Lisa was completely thrown by his response. By the time she came to her senses, he had walked out of the manor.
The sun had risen well above the horizon when he stepped out. Its warm rays embraced the entire city, signaling everyone within it to wake up and go about their day. However, it did nothing to chase
away the gloominess in his heart.
Perhaps it was karma that had subjected everyone who lived in this manor to suffer horrible fates!
Getting into the car, he felt tears building up in them again. Then, his phone rang. Picking it up, he realized it was Zoe who called him. His features softened and his expression was no longer that fierce. He answered the phone tenderly, “What’s the matter?”
Zoe’s voice was trembling. “Yanni just had a nosebleed. The pills are usually enough to stop it, but it’s been thirty minutes already and they haven’t done anything. I’m scared, Mason…”
She sounded so vulnerable.
Gripping his phone tightly, he said in an especially gentle and affectionate tone, “Stay with Yanni. I’ll be back right away.”
“Okay.”
Hanging up the phone, he found himself breathing heavily. He wasn’t as calm and controlled as he tried to appear.
