“I can’t do that! Yanni’s important to me, but Zoe is equally important as well. The fact that I did so many wrongs by her just made it worse! I owe it to her!”
Mason paused a little before clenching his fist and continuing softly.” I know you still love her and that she used to have feelings for you…”
Cecil cut him off and asked, “Why are you so generous all of a
sudden?”
Lowering his gaze, Mason smiled bitterly. Moments later, he turned around and said to Cecil, “Power and status was all I cared about in the past. I used to think that having a family of my own was nothing but a bonus. Never did I consider that I’d sacrifice myself just so my kid could live on. I could just as easily make another kid. Don’t you agree?
“However, Zoe gave birth to Yanni because of me.
“That’s why I love her.”
Mason didn’t specify who he was talking about and Cecil didn’t ask any further questions.
He stopped fighting him on his decision because he could see the determination and courage in Mason’s eyes. It turned out that when he loved someone this much, he could readily surrender his life. It turned out that someone like Mason was capable of selfless love.
The sun started to set below the horizon.
Cecil said softly, “I’ll take charge of the surgery. You have to promise me, Mason. Fight and survive! You have to live on even if it means living with permanent disabilities…”
Turning around, he left with tears in his eyes.
He could see it now. There was no way he could ever be with Zoe in this lifetime. Mason’s love and hatred were so profound that it was something he could never match up to. In fact, no one else could come between their relationship.
Zoe couldn’t have won Mason’s heart in the past. Now, however, he would become the figure who would stay in her heart for eternity. She’d keep him in there for the rest of her life.
Mia was gripped with such an intense relief that tears rolled down her cheeks when she heard about the latest treatment plan for Yanni.
She spoke to Zoe quietly, “I never had much faith in Mason, to be honest, but he’s really quite reliable when it comes to Yanni. I think it’s true, Zoe. He can get Yanni’s condition fixed.”
“Yeah,” Zoe responded gently.
Brushing her hands across Yanni’s cheeks, she could finally say that she was calm now.
Mia proceeded to tell her what was on her mind. “If you and Mason should have another baby, perhaps you should think about settling down with him. Time will heal everything. More importantly, he treats you so well now.”
At that moment, the man in question opened the door.
Mia was much friendlier to him now. She also made an excuse to leave the ward and give them some privacy. “I’ll leave you guys to it
and get some food!”
He nodded in response and closed the door after Mia left. Then, he walked over to Zoe and held her by the shoulders, Staring at Yanni, he said softly, “Yanni can come home in a couple of days! Also, we’re going to have to start thinking about the nutrition in her meals if she’s going to have surgery next month.”
Instead of pushing him away, she leaned on his shoulder and said. gently, “I’m going to put my work aside and focus on looking after her this month.”
Tilting his head, he admired her beauty. His heart was gripped with anxiety, but he managed to keep a lid on it and make small talk with. her, the way an ordinary couple would.
“I might work late for the next couple of weeks. There’s so much work that needs to be done. Give me a call if she won’t sleep at night. I’ll talk to her through the phone and put her to sleep.”
Then, a shot of sadness gripped his heart.
If anything bad should happen to him, he’d let Zoe take over Lockwood Corporation. She might’ve been a capable lady, but he wanted to clear the path for her as best as he could and hand everything over to her in a calm, controlled manner.
He had a month to do it.
That was way less time than he would’ve liked.
