Chapter 436
Her words were filled with irony.
Liam was usually a calm man, but even he was stung by what she said. He wasn’t supposed to say it, but the words came out before he could stop them. “You know I love you, Zoe!”
Time itself seemingly froze and an awkward silence hung over the air.
For a few seconds there, he regretted blurting it out. However, he was both a lawyer and a practical man. Now that the cat was out of the bag, he figured he should stand by it
Staring at Zoe, he asked, “Are you still waiting for Mason? Why won’t you give me a chance?”
Her voice was icy cold when she replied, “I’ll never fall in love with you! I’ll always remember how you plotted our family’s downfall! Here you are, asking me to be with you. Have you got a screw loose, Liam?”
Reaching out, Liam clutched her hand.
She was startled and tried to shake him off, but he forcibly pulle close. She got so close that their bodies were almost pressed ag each other. The way he stared at her made her think he had los
mind. n
His voice was husky when he said, “There’s nothing wrong with m know you hate me. For that matter, I’m aware Noah hates me too. you want to know what he did? He seduced my younger sister, Gwynn, and married her at Silvercrest a year ago!”
Zoe was rooted to the spot.
Noah married Liam’s younger sister, he said…
Why would her brother do such a thing?
Gritting his teeth, Liam barked, “He did it to take revenge, of course! It’s true. I did ruin your family, but think about it. Didn’t the Sanders deserve this after what they did to my family?
“I was the one who did it. Why did he have to drag Gwynn into this? She’s just twenty-two years old and he’s a whole twelve years older than her. Just what does she see in him?
“I know that he’s both wealthy and good-looking, but he was convicted and sentenced to jail!”
Zoe’s voice was cold when she said, “And why do you suppose my brother was sent to jail? Do I really have to remind you, Liam?”
She shoved him away, hard.
Underneath the glow of the neon lights, the innocence and gullibility in Zoe’s delicate face were long gone. All of the suffering she had been through had stripped any sympathy off of her. After all, she wa
no saint.
She looked at Liam and sneered, “Back then, you stood by and watched as I struggled and begged for your help… You must’ve derived some twisted pleasure from it!
“You blamed my dad for what happened to you and took revenge on him. However, did you ever stop to think that Noah and I had nothing to do with it? You’re only mad now because karma’s a bitch!”
She spoke harshly, but, on the inside, she was shedding tears for Gwynn.
She knew Noah all too well.
Still, she didn’t let anything show on her face. Shaking him off, she immediately opened her car door and got into it. Taking off her high heels swiftly and decisively, she stepped on the gas pedal.
She would’ve rammed Liam to death if he hadn’t ducked out of the way in time.
Zoe lowered her window as her silver Rolls-Royce whooshed past him and barked, “I have insurance!”
He had nothing to say to that.
She drove all the way to Mason’s manor.
Her thoughts were in a mess. Instead of getting out of the car, she sat in the car by herself.
After a long time, she made a phone call to Noah, but his phone was turned off. She wanted to send him a text, but thought better of it. Tossing her phone into the glove compartment, she leaned back on her seat and spaced out in silence.
Some time passed when someone opened her car door.
It was Mason. Sitting in his wheelchair, he was dressed in formal attire, even though it was night.
Staring at her quietly, he mocked her, “Are you still reliving the swee loving moments of your date?”
He was about to keep taking digs at her when he inadvertently saw tears in the corner of her eyes. His heart softened at once as he asked affectionately, “What’s the matter?”
