Chapter 493
Furthermore, Mia started to miss Noah when she heard Mason’s
voice.
Then, she returned the phone to Zoe
Zoe was about to hang up the phone when she heard him saying tenderly, “Happy New Year, Zoe!”
For a brief moment, she didn’t say anything.
She fell into a trance, thinking about how this was the best new year
they had had ever since they knew each other. Waves of both
happiness and anguish washed over her.
Then, she murmured, “Happy New Year, Mason.”
Both of them didn’t hang up the phone.
Holding it close to their ears, they listened intently to the light breathing from the other end of their phones. It was soft and gentle, reminiscent of the pleasant wind caressing their ears at the moment.
Not long after, her ears began to get warmer. She was worried Mia might notice it, so she hung up frantically. Raising her eyes to check on Mia, she realized her stepmother was staring into space.
She couldn’t help but hold her hands and call out to her, “Are you thinking about Dad, Mia?”
To her surprise, Mia said, “The moment I heard Mason’s voice, I thought about Noah. I’ve no idea how he’s doing now! I wonder how things are going between him and that girl.”
Zoe decided not to tell Mia about Maddox.

sure she had a good life here, then Zoe could never bring up anything about Maddox, especially his fate.
So, all she told Mia was this. “Gwynn is six months pregnant now! I think that’s why they decided it’s not a good idea to come back here for the time being.”
Despite her attempt to soothe Mia, her stepmother just couldn’t be happy about it. Sighing, she said, “I should be happy over the fact that there’s going to be another member in our family. In fact, I kind of owe it to your parents to be happier about it, too!
“However, the baby was part Worshem. I truly have no idea how I’m supposed to face her if the day should come when Noah brings her back to Brookesville. On top of that, I have mixed feelings about
having to take care of the baby!”
Zoe was experiencing a multitude of emotions when it came to this
topic.
Smiling faintly, she said, “Let’s cross that bridge when we get to it! Let’s remember that Gwynn was innocent in all of this. We’re all ladies, Mia. We shouldn’t try to make lives difficult for each other.”
Mia pulled herself together and said, “You have a point!”
Then, Zoe pulled out a bottle of red wine for the occasion. Uncorking it, she poured herself and Mia half a glass each. Although Mia couldn’t drink it, it helped set the mood.
A servant was standing by the door holding an exquisite jewelry box
in her hands.
“It was sent from overseas! Mr. Noah must’ve sent it here.”
Zoe opened it. As expected, there were two sets of lavishing jewelry. One of them was Ruby while the other was emerald. Clearly, these were gifts for both Zoe and Mia.

Mia quite liked exquisite gifts. So, she felt better after she laid her
eyes on it.
Zoe, on the other hand, was burdened with heavy thoughts. It had been a few days since she returned to Brookesville, but she was having a problem forgetting what she saw in Nihonburg, much less Gwynn, who was pregnant. Back then, she had crouched on the balcony on the second floor with despair in her eyes.
Fireworks exploded all over the sky as the clock struck midnight.
Standing on the balcony attached to her bedroom by herself, she admired the resplendent view quietly. She might’ve been alone, but she felt her life was filled with happiness and fulfillment. The only thing she felt sorry for was the fact that her dad was no longer with
her!
Her phone started buzzing in her front pocket. Pulling it out, she saw
it was a text from Mason.
“Happy New Year, Zoe! From this point on, we have to be happy every single year. This isn’t a prayer. It’s a promise from me.”
She looked at it for a brief moment, but she didn’t send a reply.
It looked like he had learned how to sweet-talk her now!
Zoe didn’t sleep until after two.
By the time she woke up, it was the morning of a new year. The gentle sunlight shone into her bedroom and fell on her, creating a delicate
sight.
Checking the time, she saw that it was already nine o’clock.
Then, she rolled back onto her bed and stared at the ceiling, falling into deep thought. It had been a long time since she had a good

night’s sleep. She would’ve kept sleeping too, if it wasn’t because she was worried about Mia.
She decided it’d be wise to go downstairs and check on her
stepmother.
