Chapter 116

Joseph received praise but felt a bit confused. During their time in the haunted house,
he hardly spoke a word and tightly held Sherry’s hand the entire time.
Whenever a “ghost” appeared, Sherry would shield him from seeing it. When there was
a puzzle to solve, she would personally try it out and only lead him through when she
was sure.
“No, it wasn’t actually me.”
Just as he was about to defend himself, he heard Nora’s voice not far away. “Joseph!
Come to me quickly!”
Joseph lost it upon seeing Nora. Tears instantly streamed down his face as he pushed
away the onlookers and rushed straight into Nora’s embrace. “Mom!”
“Good boy, don’t cry. Have you been mistreated? Don’t be afraid; me and your dad are
here. If anyone bullies you, just tell us; Daddy will teach her a lesson.”
There was an underlying meaning in her words, and David understood it as well.

He reached out and touched Joseph’s head, feeling heartbroken. His face turned dark.
“Yes, I’m here. Did that woman bully you? What did she do to you?”
Joseph continued to cry, unable to speak at all.
Nora gently hugged him and spoke again. “David, Joseph has never been a timid child
since he was little. You have always taught him to be brave; it’s unlikely for him to cry like this. It must not be because he was scared by some ghost, but because he,.
encountered something that made him feel uncomfortable.”
“I know, Joseph is my son. How could I not understand him?” David said, “I know what
you’re thinking. I haven’t had any contact with Alice for more than twenty years. I can’t possibly care about her child. Joseph is my offspring. How could I bear to see him
suffer even a little bit?”
Nora’s eyes also turned red. She glanced at him, and her voice trembled as she said,
“David, you are an upright man. Alice is also a good person. If you want to take care of Sherry, I fully agree. But seeing Joseph so heartbroken breaks my heart as a mother!”
“I know, I know, you have always been gentle, kind, and considerate. Don’t worry, you

are now Mrs, Wilson; you don’t need to worry about others. Leave these trivial matters.
to me to handle.”
“David…” Nora leaned her head on his chest, sobbing softly. “Being able to marry you is the greatest blessing of my life.”
“Alright, alright, why are you crying too? David comforted her gently, but his gaze was fixed on Sherry, who was standing not far away. “Alright, you take Joseph over there to
rest for a while, buy him some snacks and toys, and I’ll go talk to her.”
Nora held Joseph and nodded. “Okay, David, don’t be too angry. No matter what, she is Alice’s daughter. Even if she did something wrong, as elders, we should teach her properly instead of scolding her directly. She wouldn’t know much about you and her
mother’s past; she probably just wants to seek justice for her mother.”
“I understand. You always think about others, whether it’s the late Alice or her daughter
now. When have you ever thought about yourself? I’ve said it before: You are too kind;
that’s why others take advantage of you.”
He was getting furious as he spoke.

His past with Alice was an absolute taboo that he didn’t want to mention, especially
now that her daughter had caused his precious son to suffer. He couldn’t suppress hist
anger, no matter what.
David walked quickly toward Sherry. While Nora changed her submissive appearance, a
barely noticeable smile appeared on her lips after he left.
Sherry, your mother couldn’t defeat me back then. Now, you, a little girl, wanted to
challenge me? You’re still too young!
“Mom…” Joseph wiped his tears. “Mom, I’m thirsty. I want to drink cola.”
Nora wiped the tears off his face with tissue, feeling disgusted. She threw it into the
nearby trash can. “Let’s go; I will take you to buy cola.”
Joseph said, “Mom, actually, Miss didn’t bully me. I was just scared; that’s why I cried.”
Nora instantly stopped walking, her gaze becoming sharp. “What did you call her?”
“Miss,” Joseph blinked. “Didn’t you ask me to call her this backstage at the car

exhibition?”
Nora sneered, “Joseph, remember, you only have one sister, which is Sophia. And Sherry is a bad person. She wants to snatch your father away. Think about it: if your father stops caring about you and starts caring about her, what will we do?”

Joseph didn’t quite understand. Furrowing his brows, he said, “Mom, she’s actually not
a bad person, and she doesn’t have any relationship with my dad; why would she want
to snatch him away?”
“Who told you she’s not a bad person? Just because you played in a haunted house
with her, do you think she’s not bad? I’ve told you the story of Little Red Riding Hood;
she’s like a big bad wolf in disguise. When you let your guard down, she will attack.”
Joseph scratched his head, torn between his own feelings and his mother’s
admonition. After thinking for a while, he still decided to trust his mother, after all, she
was the gentlest and most caring person to him.
“Joseph, be honest with me, what did you hear inside?”

“Scary music and the sound of wind!”
Nora said, “No, I’m talking about Sherry. What did she say to your sister? And your
brother–in–law, did they say anything strange?”

Joseph struggled. “Um, I don’t really understand what you mean by strange things, but I
heard her say that Sophia is pregnant and not suitable for the haunted house, so the staff took her out.”
“Okay, what else?”
“Nothing else,” Joseph suddenly remembered. “Oh, she was on the phone the whole
time inside, and the person on the other end seemed really capable. They helped us
solve various puzzles so we could get out quickly.”
Finally, they got to the point. Nora smirked and continued, “Could you hear what the
person on the phone said?”
Joseph shook her head and said, “I couldn’t hear it clearly, but I was really curious to
know what the she called him, something like ‘Mr. Snooper‘?”

Nora repeated, “Snooper?”

“Yeah, it sounded like an English name, but our teacher didn’t teach us that word, so I’m
not sure. I could only grasp a general understanding.”
