I frowned in confusion when I opened my eyes to find myself in a white
room.
A heart monitor beeped in the room, and I frowned at the headache that I got as the loud sound started increasing, and racing.
I rubbed my eyes, my arms aching, only to frown in confusion when I found Nikolay sitting beside me. His eyes met mine, and he got up from the chair that he was sitting on, slowly approaching me. My heart raced against my ribcage, beeping in the monitor, and noticing that, Nikolay took a step back.
“Easy, baby girl.” He said, his voice just above a whisper.
“What happened?” I asked, shaking my head. I looked down at my hand to frown when I saw that it was bandaged.
“Katerina.”
I went to touch my face only for my hands to shake when I realized that scabs formed on my forehead, cheek, and nose. I shook my head, trying to recall what happened only for my heart to drop to my stomach when I realized that the nightmare that I had was not actually a nightmare, it was my reality. My father did beat me up the way that he did.
“Where is he?” I asked, shaking my head in question as I tried to sit up. My ribs ached, and it didn’t take me long to realize that the man broke them. Tears fell from my eyes at that, and Nikolay shook his head at me, as he slowly took a seat on the edge of the bed beside me. “Where is my father?”
“I am surprised that after this, you are calling him father, Kat.” Nikolay said, his voice softening. “But to answer your question, he is behind bars until you wake up. You have the right to decide to press charges or not, but if you don’t, we are going to have to put you under a protection program.”

“What difference does it make? Just like your mother, he would find a way to threaten me into dropping it” I said, shaking my head at him. Nikolay’s eyes softened and he took my hand in his, gently kissing my knuckle. I looked down at my stomach and I could swear that I had a bandage over it, and frowning. I lowered my hand to touch it, and Nikolay looked away. I tried to press on the area only for Nikolay to stop me. “What happened to me, Nikolay?”
“Katerina, you need to rest for a bit. Let me call the doctor.” He said, wanting to get up from the bed. I shook my head, tightening my hand around his wrist, at least, as tight as I could manage. At this point, I was just happy to be able to look at the man.
“Nikolay, I know that I am the least of your concern, but please, what happened to me? Why am I bandaged on my stomach?”
“I’m so sorry, malyshka.” He whispered, making my heart drop. “I’ll call in the nurse, she and the doctor would be able to explain this to you.”
The man rushed out of the room before I could say a word. I looked to the side, and noticed the mirror that was on the bedside table. My heart dropped, aching, and feeling as if it had been ripped out of my chest as I caught sight of my reflection. My whole face seemed to be re–arranged, bruised, bloodied, and despite it being obvious that I was healing, I knew that it would take a very long time before my face was back to normal.
My heart raced, being reflected on the monitor, and I couldn’t help the tears that fell from my eyes at that. My heart broke, and I shook my head at what they had seen me go through. How the bloody hell would they be respecting me now? If anything, how was I to have any respect for myself.

The room’s door opened, revealing two nurses, a doctor, and Nikolay who stood back by the door. His eyes avoided mine, and he didn’t need to speak for me to know that whatever it was that he didn’t want to tell me was serious. The man’s expression said it all, and for the first time in my life, I found myself petrified of what I was going to hear. My heart raced a I waited, and the doctor’s slow attitude didn’t make things any better. If

anything, she only made me fear what she was going to tell me a lot more than I expected.
“How are you feeling Mrs. Ivanov?” She asked, putting on the best smile that she could muster. It was one of a doctor, one that I knew too well. It was the same smile that one of the doctors gave me before they had told me that they needed to treat me of leukemia by transplanting a new bone
marrow.
“What is it that you are hiding from me?” I asked, cutting to the point. “What is it that Nikolay is not telling me?”
“Mrs. Katerina, please rest assured that you have been in good hands and that your husband has set the best doctors to take care of you.” The doctor said, smiling at Nikolay who still didn’t look at me. My chest ached and my heart raced as I took a deep breath. “I am sorry for what you have been through.”
I looked up at her, and her smile seemed to fade when she saw the pain that I had in my eyes. I had to admit, I have been through abuse. throughout all my life by my father, but it never got this aggressive and now, I just wondered how I was going to ever be able to look at my husband or his family without fearing how they would be treating me after what they saw. If anything, they could easily end up treating me just as harsh or with the same manner, claiming that if my father did it, why shouldn’t they, and in theory, they could be right.
“You had to get two stiches on you forehead, we made sure to have it leaving the least of scars. Your hand, more specifically, your right wrist has been fractured, and your left knee had two split tendons.” She said, looking at Nikolay whose eyes dropped to the ground completely before she turned to look at me, her expression hardening as she tried to stay calm and void of emotion. “The punches or kicks ended up harming your ovaries and uterus, your right ovary had to be removed due to internal bleeding and complete damage…“.
“What?” I asked, frowning as I processed her words.

“According to your records of your previous diagnosis of leukemia, you might have had a harder time to give birth to a child as it might risk your health, but…”

“No, he couldn’t have taken that away from me too.” I said, shaking my head, stopping the woman. She closed her eyes as Nikolay walked out of the room, leaving me alone. “Please tell me that you are lying about this.” “I’m so sorry, Mrs. Ivanov, but you would be needing to undergo a lot of medication and treatments before you can consider having a child. Otherwise, the results could be fatal on both you and your baby.” She said, watching as my tears fell freely from my eyes. “For now, you need focus on healing and growing stronger. Believe me, at this point, the last thing that you can even consider or concern is having a child.”
I looked down on the floor, shaking my head as I refused to believe that what she was saying was true. I couldn’t be the one to keep losing everything, right? Life couldn’t be THAT unfair to me, right?
Noticing that I didn’t answer, the doctor walked toward me and slowly put her hand on my shoulder, gently squeezing it to catch my attention. “I will be leaving you alone for a bit, but I want you to keep in mind not to hurt yourself because of this. I know that it is touch, and that it is painful, but there is always hope, little, yes, but you can still choose to hold on to it, and you would be able to get past a lot more than you think, okay? The ladies would be here if you need anything…”
