Chapter 50
Katerina:
“Hello,” I said, smiling at Nikolay’s parents, greeting them inside. Both smiled at me as they walked in, taking in the house, and I smiled, loving the fact that they were here.
At least I would have someone to talk to rather than the calm or dull mood that the house was in. I had to admit, the preparations to the gathering were enough to get my mind off things, and seeing as I knew that Nikolay was trying to fix things, I was keeping an open mind to it.
Fighting and arguing has gotten us nowhere in the past week, and I had to admit, I was actually growing tired of it. If anything, I believed that even Nikolay noticed that.
Nikolay wrapped his arm around my waist, and looking up at him, he gave me a quick nod, silently asking me not to say anything about our issues. I knew that he was right, his mum finding out about us arguing or not wanting to be together normally was not something that I liked at all, if anything, it was something that I dreaded.
I stood on my toes, despite wearing heels, and kissed his cheek, smiling when he tightened his arm around me to pull me closer. I had to admit, it was something that I missed a lot, and though I never did expect to miss his touch as much as I did, I did, and that made me hate the fact that we were becoming distant.
I pulled away to look him in the eye, smiling when I saw that his eyes met mine and a small smile formed on his lips, revealing a small dimple that I don’t remember paying attention to before. He ran his finger over my waist before looking at his parents.
“My apologies for being late, I had a few things to tend to.” Nikolay said and both his parents smiled and nodded. I smiled, and motioned for them to come inside after two of the maids took their jackets, hanging them. Both followed us toward the living room where there were juices and
“I take it that the two of you have managed to work on your relationship.” I stayed quiet and looked down at my lap as we all sat. I didn’t know how his parents were around one another considering that we were not at home anymore, but I could tell that their relationship was not one that was going to be fixed easily. If anything, these two were going to need more than just a little counseling for them to fix it. They have wasted their lives hated one another too much, and that was something that we all knew for fact.
“Yes, we have.” Nikolay answered, smiling as he looked at me. My cheeks reddened and I had to fight back the frown that almost formed on my face at his lie. If anything, our relationship was one that was cold, and it was the main reason why I chose not to respond. The pain that I felt on a daily basis because of it was one that I couldn’t even describe. Whether it was a heartbreak or I was simply upset that I knew that I might never be able to get the man that I was in love with to love me back, I didn’t know. But I knew for fact that something was hurting me, and it was hurting me a lot.
“And what do you have to say about it, Katerina?” His father asked, catching my attention. I looked at him and smiled before laying my head on Nikolay’s chest, listening to his racing heartbeat as he probably feared that I would end up telling his parents that the two of us haven’t been on the best of terms. In reality, I knew that telling them that would only lead me to getting into more trouble than I could afford, and to be honest, I really didn’t want to end up dealing with his mother’s mess. I wasn’t stupid enough to quickly forget the struggles that I have been through before. with her, and therefore, I chose to smile in response.
“The two of us have been doing great since the hospital. I am guessing that us moving here was only another step closer to us building our relationship.” I said, and his father smiled.
“With that said, I believe that we can say that we can expect a child soon.” His mother said, making my face drop. My heart race against my chest and I found my breath getting caught in my throat. And it wasn’t due to us not touching, no. It was due to the fact that I knew that I might NEVER be able to have a child to begin with, and the worst part about it was that she
knew that for fact. If anything, the woman knew that I might never be able to conceive and therefore, I couldn’t understand why she would be asking such a harsh question when she knew the condition that I was in.
If anything, even the possibility of me having a child wouldn’t be one unless the doctors were sure of my ovary and uterus which were still very weak and still needed healing. I cleared my throat, trying to fight back tears before I got up from the couch. “I will go and check on dinner and how things are going.”
“Katerina…” I didn’t bother looking at Nikolay who looked at his mother with wide eyes. “Why? Just fucking why?”
The man didn’t wait for his mother’s response before he got up from the couch and walked toward me. He wrapped his arm around me, pulling me toward him before I could reach the kitchen, and it took everything in me not to push him away.
“Katerina, I am so sorry, I did not know that she would end up opening a sensitive topic like this one when she knew the situation in hand.” He said, and I nodded, knowing that he was being honest. Whatever her reason was, I was surprised by her question, even just as surprised as Nikolay was considering the fact that she was with us throughout the whole process. It wasn’t like we told her about anything, no, she was there by our side, and she heard everything that the doctors told me. Therefore, her question as more harsh on me than anything else that she has ever said.
“Let us get this night over with before things end up getting too bad. I don’t know what your mother is planning, I apologize for my choice of wording, but if she is planning on creating problems out of nothing…”
“I will not be allowing it.” He said, stopping me. “As for what just happened here, I will know how to tend to it. I just need you to calm down for me, okay?”
“Any calmer than this and I would end up turning into a brick of ice. I will have you know that.” I said, and he chuckled before wrapping his arm around me and pulling me to his chest again, hugging me tightly.
