Chapter 225
Rosemary arranged for her chauffeur to drive Zoe home when the dinner party ended.
ene noticed a black Land Rover parked at the entrance the moment she got out of the car. Liam was leaning on his car, breathing out a puff of smoke. Instead of a cigar, he smoked an ordinary cigarette instead.
He saw her and walked over to give her a document. “It’s about Noah’s case. The court date has been pushed back by two months!”
Her fingers were trembling slightly when she took the document. How did this happen?”
Taking a big puff, he said, “I asked around, but they wouldn’t say why!
suggest you ask Mason about it, Zoe. He might have more. Information on the matter.” He paused briefly before continuing,” There’s nothing I can do if some things are done outside the confines of the law, but Mason can do it without lifting his finger.”
She raised her eyes abruptly. Underneath the street light’s dim illumination, her face turned pale.
Liam knew it was cruel to tell her that, but he had no other choice. Only a few people commanded enough power and influence to effect change. Mason had the kind of status and power to do anything he wanted in Brookesville. All Zoe had to do was put her pride aside. Then, anything could be done!
Snuffing out the cigarette, he turned around, got into his car, and drove away.
She didn’t want her father and Mia to find out about it. So, instead of going upstairs, she gave Mason a call with trembling hands.

It rang several times before he answered with a gentle voice, “It’s so late now. Is there anything you need?”
After a brief silence, she strained and said, “Noah’s court date was pushed back by two months.”
replied casually, “Yeah! I heard.”
“Do you have anything to…”
He cut her off and spoke with a gentle, deep voice, “Is that what you want to talk about? Let’s do it face-to-face! I’ll wait for you at the
manor.”
With that, he hung up the phone.
She was rooted to the spot, feeling cold all over. She tried to wrap her coat tightly around herself, but the piercing cold never faded away.
She was no simpleton. It was clear why he asked her to go to his place. What else did a man want from a lady?
It was the middle of the night, but she went to Lockwood Manor.
Layla came over the moment her cab pulled over and welcomed her warmly, “Mr. Mason’s waiting for you upstairs, Ms. Zoe!”
She already had a full plate, so she didn’t bother reminding her that they were divorced. Composing herself, she asked, “Is he in the study or the lounge?”
Layla led her indoors and responded, “He’s in the lounge! He comes home quite early these days. I never see him hanging out with anyone lately.”
She forced a smile at the servant.
Layla went back downstairs after leading her to the second floor. She
opened the bedroom door and saw that the lights were turned on. Mason wore a black silk dressing gown and leaned on the couch, flipping through a magazine. There was a sense of casual charm about him.

put down the magazine and directed his gaze at her when he ard the door opening. Then, his gaze lingered on her slender waist.
She probably attended Rosemary’s dinner party. He said tenderly, Have you been drinking? I’ll ask Layla to brew some tea and bring it up here.”

She cut him off, “I’m not here to act like we’re a loving couple, Mason! More to the point, there wasn’t much to work with, anyway. All I want to know is if you have anything to do with postponing Noah’s case?”
He stared at her with his deep, black eyes. What she felt from gazing into them was unsettling.
After a brief moment, he sneered, “Do you think I have what it takes to push back this significant case by two months? You have too high an opinion of me, Zoe!”
She squinted in response. “You didn’t do it?”
Sitting upright, he took a document from the coffee table and handed it to her. “It’s probably this! They wanted to consolidate these cases. and judge them in one go, but the relevant figures have yet to provide evidence. That’s why it got pushed back.”
