Ella could hear cars pulling over and Zoe’s guttural screams. All of a sudden, the advertisement boards around her rolled up another screen. Each one of them was displaying Leslie and Nellie’s wedding pictures.

Zoe waited outside the operating room for ten hours. It was the middle of the night by the time the doctor came out and gave her the bad news.

Raising her head, she looked at the doctor with a blank expression.
The baby’s gone and Ella might sleep in a coma forever.
The doctor knew she was depressed and said softly, “We’ll send her to the Intensive Care Unit in a while. You can see her in her ward now.
Just take a left turn over there.”
She thanked the doctor. Raising her head after the doctor left, she felt tears streamed down her cheeks. Her legs were wobbly when she walked toward Ella’s ward.
Leaning on the wall of an empty hallway, she bawled miserably! All she could think of was what Ella told her that night.
“I’ll move out of Brookesville in two more weeks and live in a smaller city. I’ll buy a house and set up a flower shop. That’s where I’ll raise my baby.”
“You’re going to be staying so far away, though. I’ll miss you!”
“Will you drop by and visit me?”
In the end, both of them would never see the baby and there was no such thing as meeting again in two years time. What reality had in store for them was a dead baby and a vegetative Ella.
