Chapter 342
“You want me to take custody of your granddaughter.”
Lowering his gaze, he glared at her mockingly.
He wore a stern expression when he raised his eyes again. “Have you forgotten the way you treated her back then? What would’ve
happened to her if I took custody of Yanni? Am I supposed to tear them apart?
“Perhaps you should stop taking things that don’t belong to you. You should be grateful that I didn’t leave you in the rehabilitation center for the rest of your life. From here on out, I want you to stop coming to this manor.”
He did it. He had thrown down the gauntlet.
Lisa glared at him as though she was about to eat him alive. After a brief moment, she cackled, “What makes you think you can dictate the rules here?”
She was his mother, after all. She knew all about his vulnerabilities and what to say to hurt him the most. “Do you think she’ll forgive you if you stay in this manor? Do you think she’ll return to your side if you learn how to be a good husband as well as father?”
Her cackle grew louder as she said, “Here’s the thing. She’ll never forget about it, nor will she ever return to your side.
“Need I remind you of the atrocious things you did to her? You cast her out of your manor when she had just gone through labor. Then, you banished her to that hellhole and left her to her own devices.
“You can claim that you sent her there to treat her condition.
However, if that’s the case, then why didn’t you ever visit her? You’re a
twisted man, Mason. In fact, you’re a downright psycho. You did what you did because you’d rather ruin her completely than set her free!
“Hit a little close to home, have I?
“So many men are trying to win her heart now. What makes you think she’d choose a man who used to hurt her so deeply? She’s not going to take you back.
“All she’s going to do is play you like a fiddle and rip your heart to shreds the way you did to her all those years ago. She’ll stomp on your worthless love.”
Mason maintained a blank expression underneath the fluorescent lights.
Lisa thought she had him.
After a brief moment, he said ever so softly, “I’m more than willing to let her do that to me!”
She couldn’t believe what she just heard. After a long time, she shook her head lightly and murmured repeatedly, “If only your father could see you now. Westley was such a heartless monster, but his son turned out to be a hopeless romantic! How absurd! This has got to be the biggest joke of the century!”
It was the middle of the night and Lisa had lost her marbles.
Instead of leaving her alone, he asked his servants to take her away with a grim expression. Then, he relayed an order that Lisa was forbidden to step foot on the premises in the future.
Lisa was still rambling about Westley when the servants led her away.
The manor finally had some peace and quiet, but he was still roiling with intense emotions. He had gone through too much shock today.
He was worried about Yanni as well as Zoe.
It wasn’t as if he wasn’t lonely all these years. He’d look at her pictures and call her defunct number when he felt alone.
He could easily have gotten her new number or tracked her down, but he didn’t do it because he was afraid she’d get mad.
Now that she was back in Brookesville, he felt an all-new sense of hope. He knew she came back here with a personal agenda, but he knew they would form some sort of bond eventually. Her heart would soften someday.
It was the middle of the night. He could no longer hold himself back
and made a call to her.
Surprisingly, she answered it.
Still worried that she disliked him, he asked softly, “How’s Yanni? Is she sleeping well?”
“Yeah.”
The late hour probably softened her somehow because her voice was tender, unlike the cold tone she usually used when talking to him. He couldn’t help but feel anxious.
Then, he said in a deep voice, “I didn’t really have a good reason fo calling you. I just wanted to hear your voice.”
Smiling faintly, she responded, “There’s nothing special about my voice! I’m sure you’ve grown sick of it after so many years.”
Was he supposed to ignore the flirty tone in her voice? She might’ve been playing hard to get, but it was obvious what she really wanted.
He liked that about her.
However, it begged a question. Did she learn to flirt by doing it with other guys? Had she loved anyone in the past three years?
