Chapter 353
What did he thank her for?
It took her a while to understand that he thanked her because she didn’t teach Yanni to hate him. Instead, she allowed their little girl to get close to him. All of a sudden, she felt a lump in her throat.
Her voice was soft when she said, “I told you when I left. I wanted to teach her how to love people and live a happy life.” She added, ” Yanni’s my daughter. She’s not a tool I use for my own interests.”
Mason remained quiet after that. He merely sat in the car with a stern expression on his face.
Yanni saw it, cupped his face, and said adorably, “Give me a smile,
Dad!”
He responded by flashing her a gentle smile, which brought a grin to her face too. He saw her teeth and thought that they looked exactly like Zoe when she was a little girl.
Then, he felt a lump in his throat too. If only he had stayed loyal to Zoe in the past, then he would’ve had a happy life with his family. He wouldn’t have to ‘share’ her with another man.
He broke the silence and said, “How’s life in Silvercrest?”
She responded, “It’s pretty good.”
After that, he remained quiet for the rest of the drive.
They finally arrived at her apartment, but he didn’t go up to her place this time. Instead, he went to the back of the car and took Yanni’s stuff out of the trunk. That was when she saw a suitcase in there.
He clarified, “I need to go to Huckburgh for work. Ava’s waiting for me
at the airport.”
Then, it hit her. He actually had a busy schedule, but he still made time for Yanni and spent two days with her.
Taking Yanni’s hands in hers, she said softly, “Hurry up. You need to catch your flight!”
He stared at her intensely, hoping eagerly that things would take a turn for the better.
Lowering her head, she led Yanni back to her apartment. The little girl raised her head and asked, “When will Dad take me to his manor again, Mommy?”
Flashing her little girl a faint smile, she responded, “You can call your dad and ask him about it in a while.”
He leaned on his car and stayed there until they vanished into the apartment. Then, he opened the car door and got into the car.
By the time he reached the airport, Ava was already very restless.
“You’re here at last, Mr. Mason!”
Handing his suitcase to her, he walked rapidly and said, “We’ve still got five minutes.”
The last person Mason expected to see in Lockwood Corporation’s branch company in Hucksburgh was Eira. She should’ve been out of his life since the incident three years ago.
Now, she was the public relations manager here.
She used to be shy, but now she was bold and steadfast. Ava thought she was mimicking someone and it didn’t take her too long to figure it out.
Clearly, Eira was trying to copy Zoe.
She smiled at the realization, but she didn’t say anything about it. Her opinion of Eira had plummeted again.
On the other hand, Eira probably tried to make herself stand out for him because she obviously came prepared. Mason, to his credit, had always been one who separated his private life from his work life. All he cared about was that she made profits for the company.
Needless to say, he wasn’t about to befriend her after working hours.
Her presentation was met with a round of applause from everyone except him. In fact, he barely nodded at her. She couldn’t help but feel let down.
Was it because she didn’t do a good job? Was that why he wasn’t impressed?
Eira took off after him when the meeting was adjourned and he exited the conference room. For a fleeting moment, she looked like her old self again. She was the young lady who begged for his love once more. Her voice was filled with unease when she called out to him,
Mr. Mason!”
Stopping in his tracks, he turned around and looked at her. Wearing a classic black and white suit, he was clothed in a white, crisp shirt that accentuated his dashing features.
It had been a few years since she last saw him and he looked so much more mature and stunning now.
Biting her lips, she asked, “Are you going to fire me, Mr. Mason?”
He stared at her wordlessly in response. Moments later, he said lightly, “No!”
Just as she was letting out a sigh of relief, he added, “That’s because
you’re not as important as you think you are! You’re nothing but an employee to me. Also, stop copying Zoe. You can’t hope to capture a shred of her essence. Moreover, I’m not going to fall in love with a wannabe.”
Then, he turned and left.
Eira was left alone, her shame was the only thing keeping her
company.
Here she was, thinking that he’d be pleasantly surprised to see the new her. It turned out, however, that she was the only one who
thought that way.
Was he treating her like this because Zoe was back in Brookesville?
