Chapter 360
Ava was disheartened to hear what he said. She wanted to comfort him, but realized that she didn’t know where to begin.
Time couldn’t wash away everything. Some wounds would never heal. Instead, they would fester and spread, killing everything around them. You wouldn’t be able to tell just by looking at the surface, but the rot had gone in deep.
Mason asked her to step outside and give him some space.
He lit a cigarette when he was alone, but he snuffed it out the next second. His mind traveled back to a specific moment when Zoe said
to him in tears.
“You don’t know how to love someone, Mason!”
She was right!
He didn’t know how to love someone in the past. Nothing mattered more than power and status to him. Family was nothing but an afterthought. It was something he wanted at the spur of the moment. Nothing more.
However, he knew what it meant to love someone now. She might be with another man, but he made the will nonetheless. She’d inherit Lockwood Corporation if anything happened to him.
He had gotten a blessed cross for Yanni. If his donations to the church weren’t enough to wash away his sins, then he’d give everything he owned to Zoe.
His life. His fortune. He’d sacrifice absolutely everything he had if that was what it took to make pull through this crisis.
Mason went back to the hospital around noon. He opened the door to the ward and found Ella in there.
At first, the little girl was happy, playing with Ella, but she frowned and pouted the moment she saw Mason. Tears started to fill her eyes as she called out to him pitifully, “Daddy!”
Then, she showed him her arm. A couple of track marks defaced her slender arm and put a pitiable expression on her face.
His heart ached at the sight of them
Carrying Yanni in his arms, he rubbed her arm and planted a couple of kisses on her forehead. “Does it hurt?”
Wrapping her arms around his neck, she leaned on his chest, begging for him to give her a hug.
He gulped as anguish rose in his chest.
At the next moment, he took the cross from his pocket and hung it on her neck. It was made of sterling silver and carved with intricate
details.
Yanni loved it very much and kept fiddling with it.
Lowering his head, he stared at her with tears in his eyes. His little gir was such a silly, naive kid!
It just so happened that Zoe came into the ward and witnessed this moment. Walking over to them, she checked out the cross and recognized that it was from church. He didn’t tell her anything about having knelt in the church for four hours. All he said was, “I got it from Beacon of Hope Church. They say it blesses and protects its wearer.”
“I see.
Her eyes were red. Obviously, she had been crying her eyes out for a long time.
He took her hands in his gently. She tried to break free, but she failed. He kept a firm grip on her.
There might be a lot of painful, convoluted history between them, but they decided to temporarily put it aside for Yanni’s sake.
Ella left quietly. She couldn’t deny that she still blamed Mason for what happened to Yanni. He had been so heartless to Zoe back then!
With that said, Yanni needed her dad and Zoe needed to make
another baby with him. She might’ve hated him to the core, but she had to tolerate him for now.
Then again, how was she supposed to not hate him when she knew
how he had horribly mistreated Zoe?
On top of that, she couldn’t even begin to imagine the kind of courage it took Zoe to put aside the painful past and sleep with Mason again.
Silence hung over the ward.
Yanni leaned on his chest for a while before he patted her bottom and asked her to play by herself.
Then, he looked at Zoe when they were left alone and said quietly, You should move back in with me. That way, I can look after Yanni too!” He added before she could turn down his offer, “Don’t worry about it! You can take her with you as soon as her condition gets better. I’m a man of my word, Zoe.”
He thought she’d take some time to consider his proposal. To his surprise, she agreed steadfastly.
Walking over to the window, she said miserably, “Yanni loves you! Also, I don’t like that I got a phone call from Deborah, telling me Yanni wasn’t feeling well when I was shacking up with you in the hotel. It
feels wrong. Once was enough.”
