Chapter 378
The truth was, Zoe remembered Westley.
The Sanders and the Lockwoods used to have some business relationships when she was very young. From time to time, she’d follow her parents when they paid a visit to his family. If her memory served her correctly, Westley was gentle and well-mannered.
If he hadn’t left his family behind back then, then Mason probably would’ve been a gentleman as well.
Westley broke the silence, his voice was exactly the same as she remembered, sophisticated and graceful. “Can I have a word with you, Zoe?”
Opening the car door, she got out of the car and faced him. They might not have known each other that well, but both of them shared some common family members.
Instead of bringing up the past, he asked her about Mason and Yanni. Then, he also asked about Barbara.
After a brief moment of silence, she said bitterly, “Grandma had been waiting for your return her whole life. She even called out to you during her last moments. She got delusional in the end and thought Mason was you. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have left in peace!
“You should visit her at her grave and offer up a prayer when you have the time. After all, she hadn’t had the easiest life.”
Nodding, he said, “Y-You’re right. I’ll do that!”
He got married way too haphazardly back then. After that, his relationship with Lisa took a sour turn and they have been fighting ever since. She even mistakenly thought he was having an affair with
MRIS
Ruby and proceeded to lob insults at her.
She didn’t stop there. Lisa started spreading rumors in the circles
Ruby was in, ruining her reputation in the process. It got to a point where he could no longer stand it and demanded to separate from
her.
Who would’ve known that it’d be this long until he found his way back to them again?
He had been spending some time on a cruise ship, trying to get the cobwebs out of his mind. That was when he fell off the boat, drowned, and lost his memories. He had been leading a nomad’s life ever since, alone and broke.
By the time he regained his memories and returned to Brookesville, everything had changed. His wife hated him to the core and his son gave him the cold shoulder. Even his mother, whom he respected deeply, had moved on to a better place.
There was nothing left for him here!
However, he didn’t tell Zoe any of this. He knew how hard of a life she had. So, he kept apologizing to her and asked that she bear with Mason. His son used to be a warm, loving boy when he was very young, he said.
After that, he left.
She leaned back in her seat as a small teddy bear lay down next to her on the passenger’s seat.
It felt kind of chilly that autumn night.
It was almost eight by the time Mason returned to Kirk Manor. He passed by the dining hall when Mia was cleaning up the plates and cutlery. She heard footsteps and raised her head, only to realize it
was him.
Things hadn’t been good between them.
Pausing for a while, she asked him, “Deborah and Edith made some pizzas earlier. Do you want some?”
Actually, he wasn’t hungry at all, but Mia was showing him some kindness and he had no intention to rain on her parade. So, he put his coat onto the chair and smiled faintly, “Sure. I’m feeling a little hungry, anyway! Thank you, Mia!”
She shot him a look before she went away to bring him some pizza.
Layla came over and served him a cup of hot tea. He took a sip of it and read the newspaper. At that moment, the bell of the grandfather clock in the living room struck eight times.
He paused and focused on each strike quietly.
He cherished every single second of his life recently. He would’ve recorded all of them in some form if he could.
Then, Mia came with the pizza, acting all distant. He didn’t let it
bother him. Instead, he struck up and conversation and addressed her in a respectful tone.
Mia found it distasteful and left.
Layla comforted him by saying, “Ms. Mia’s just cold on the outsid She actually cared about you, deep down.”
He smiled faintly in response.
Yanni had taken a bath when he went into a bedroossed in floral
was playing with a small teddy bear on the carpet, dressed in floral upstairs. She pajamas. She looked lovely and happy.
Lying on the couch, Zoe was paging through some documents. Now that she owned so many branches of The One Gourmet, there was
countless paperwork and ledgers she had to go through, even if she no longer showed up at the office.
Standing behind her, he held her shoulder with a hand and took her documents away with another. “Perhaps I can let my financial department run through these documents on your behalf. It’ll be easier for you that way.”
She turned down his offer.
