Chapter 391

Mason walked over, sat by the bed, and flashed her an affectionate

smile.

“I went out to take care of some matters. Did you have a nightmare?”

Zoe stared right at him wordlessly. She didn’t tell him about her dream. It felt like a bad omen. Then, she took his hands when he laid down on the bed. The warmth of his palms made her feel easier

somewhat.

It was just as they say, dreams were usually the opposite of reality. It wasn’t going to happen.

After all, it was just a dream.

Just as she was about to doze off, she thought she heard him. murmuring in her ear, saying that if she ended up getting pregnant tonight, then she should name the baby Jamie.

Zoe woke up the next morning. She thought about what he murmured over and over again in her mind and decided that it was nothing but a dream.

“You’re on edge. That’s all,” he said.

That wasn’t how she felt, though. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen. What was worse, the feeling was growing stronger by the minute. She couldn’t help but wonder if Yanni’s surgery was going to be more complicated than they had anticipated.

The nurses ran some checks before the big surgery. The bad vibe had reached its peak and overwhelmed Zoe. She was so shaken by it that she even asked Mason if they should reschedule the surgery for

some other day.

Crouching, Mason hugged and kissed Yanni. He asked softly, “Are you afraid, sweetie?”

With tears in her eyes, the little girl wrapped her arms around his shoulder and responded, “I’m scared, Daddy.”

Hugging her tight, he felt a lump in his throat at what she said. He continued in a gentle voice, “Don’t worry. Daddy’s right here with you! Here, I’ll make you a promise. You’re just going in for a little nap and you’ll be all cured once you wake up.”

Yanni pouted and was reluctant to let him go.

However, he needed to go into the operating room first. Pulling her arms away gently, he looked at her longingly and kissed her multiple

times on the cheeks.

Then, he rose and pulled Zoe into his arms. People were watching them, but he pecked the corner of her lips and said to her tenderly,” I’m going into the operating room to keep her company. Everything’s going to be fine. Don’t worry about it.”

At that moment, Zoe’s heart was pounding like crazy. She murmured, Mason…”

Giving her one last hug, he went into the operating room hastily. He had to move fast. Otherwise, he might find it hard to go through with it. He was concerned that he might say something that he’d regret

too.

Changing into the surgical gown, he lay on top of the operating table, waiting for the nurses to administer anesthetics.

Three years ago, he told Zoe that he’d set her free if she insisted on leaving.

He had hurt her so much and done her so wrong. There was nothing

he could do to ever redeem himself.

Everything had been arranged. Lockwood Corporation’s professional manager would take over for a bit before Zoe stepped up to the plate, giving her some time to come to grips with his possible demise.

She was going to take good care of his company in the future. He was sure of it.

He cherished his life and he certainly had too many reasons to live for, especially now that he had a family. Dying was the last thing he wanted to do.

Perhaps it was karma. The universe was punishing him and made it so that he could never be with Zoe. After all, the priest said that he’d have to pay his debts in blood.

Would the universe take pity on him and spare Yanni’s life if he chose to sacrifice himself? Would Zoe have been happier if he set her free?

The door to the operating room closed gently.

He could feel the anesthetic overtaking him. Cecil leaned in his ear and said in a husky voice, “We’re going to begin with the surgery, Mason…”

The anesthesia was working its effects. He blinked once, signaling Cecil that he understood what he said. Then, he slowly slipped into unconsciousness, but he was in deep sorrow.

In his dazed state, he thought he heard Yanni calling out to him.

“Daddy!” She asked in an innocent tone, “What’s dad doing here? Why’s he wearing the same clothes as I am?”

Then, he heard her crying. It sounded muffled and distant.

She asked the nurses why her daddy wasn’t moving at all…
