Chapter 398
Mason said nonchalantly, “I need her to hate me!”
He fixed his gaze on Gabriela. “Look at the sorry state I’m in. Am I supposed to let her hang onto her false hope and think about me all the time? Cutting her off now is the more merciful route. It’s the best outcome for everyone!”
Sneering, she retorted, “Best outcome for everyone? Do you even know what went on in her mind? She loves you for the kind, loving way you’ve treated her for the past few months. All of a sudden, she was told that you’ve been having sex with me for the past three years.
“That’s going to make her have some wild speculations about everything. Have you ever thought that you might make a full recovery someday, Mason? What are you going to do if you want to win her back, but she had already given up on you for good? Did it occur to you that she might’ve ended up with another man by then?”
He remained quiet briefly before responding to her with a blank face.
“I’ll take my chances!” With that, he clumsily wheeled himself back into the bedroom with his left hand.
Tears started to fill her eyes as she watched him leave. She had lost to Zoe through and through. Never had she thought that Mason would sacrifice himself to this extent, all for his family. Now, she genuinely believed that he loved Zoe from the bottom of his heart.
However, that didn’t mean he wouldn’t devastate her if the situation
called for it!
Mason sent her off, leaned back in his wheelchair alone, and quietly cast his glance downstairs. He watched as Zoe’s car pulled out of the manor and drove off. She seemed to be crying in her car.
It’d seem that it wasn’t just his body that was crippled by the surgery. It had twisted his heart too.
He did what he did because he had to make Zoe give up on him. There was another reason, though… He was self-conscious about his sorry state. The last thing he wanted was for her to see him now. That was why she had to give up on him and put as much distance between them as humanly possible.
“I’ll never see her again for the rest of my life.”
Raising his head slightly, he muttered the same phrase over and over again until a smile crept up his face and tears started to roll down his
cheeks.
A couple of days later, Ava came to his manor directly from the company. She read out all of the important documents to him one by one and handed them over for his signature.
Mason didn’t let her speak for too long before he waved his hand and rested his glance out the window.
She saw it and put down the documents. After a brief moment, she said softly, “Ms. Zoe’s gone! She’s moved back to Silvercrest.”
His face turned pale, but he didn’t say anything in response. Instead, he watched the sky above. After a long time, he asked, “When will she return again, Ava? Do you think she’ll ever come back?”
She had no answer for that.
All she knew was that Zoe had been adamant about leaving
Brookesville. There was more, too…
A
Ava wrestled with herself internally and decided to show a test result to him. Her voice was gentle when she said, “Ms. Zoe did some tests

in another hospital yesterday. Once the result was out, she quickly bought flight tickets to Silvercrest.”
After that, she left Mason alone in his study.
The man in question was stunned for a while before picking up the document and regarded the result of the ultrasound.
“The examination confirmed that the patient is five weeks pregnant.”
Zoe was pregnant!
His fingers started to quiver uncontrollably and he eventually lost grip on the test result. It fell to the carpet and he tried to pick it up hastily. The next thing he knew, all of his weight shifted to the side, his wheelchair overturned, and he fell heavily to the carpet.
Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he dragged his unresponsive legs. and painstakingly tried to crawl toward the piece of document.
However, he couldn’t even move his body an inch. He spent a long time, trying to kick the carpet and propel himself forward, but all he could manage was grind that particular area with his heel and bore a hole through it.
Much time had passed and he was still lying in the same spot,
drained.
Slowly but surely, he gripped the cruel reality of his condition.
