Chapter 399
The way he was now, what could he possibly do even if he was to chase after Zoe at the airport? Was he supposed to come clean and tell her that he had sacrificed his physical abilities for Yanni’s sake?
Was he supposed to say that he actually never slept with Gabriela, and proceed to bind her to him for the rest of his sorry life?
He couldn’t possibly do that.
Now that Zoe was pregnant, it meant there was one more thing that’d remind her of him. She would become a loving mother to their next baby and Yanni stood to gain another family member. Everything was fine and well, considering.
So, what excuse did he have to feel devastated because he couldn’t be with the lady he loved?
Lying on the floor, he panted heavily. On the other side of the door, Ava was calming herself down and regaining her composure. Then, she swung open the door and stepped into the study, only to be met with this shocking sight. “Mason!”
Dashing over, she gripped underneath his arms and pulled him up. It took her a great effort to put him back in the wheelchair and he suffered a great deal of pain from it. Beads of sweat covered his forehead and fell to the ground. She said with a strained voice, “I’m giving a call to Dr. Cecil.”
However, Mason stopped her.
Looking at the test result on the carpet, he said softly, “Don’t call him! I need to be alone for a while, Ava.”
She knew what was on his mind. Picking up the test result, she
handed it back to him. She hesitated for a while before saying, ” Actually…”
The next thing she knew, he cut her off and held the piece of paper close to his chest. “Leave me alone!”
She had to follow his orders. Just as she was closing the door, she thought about telling Zoe the truth, regardless of Mason’s wishes. However, the moment passed and her rational side got the better of her. It’d be best to respect Mason’s decision and go along with him.
From that day onward, Mason started having a troubling habit. He’d spend the better half of a day on the balcony, staring off into the eastern direction.
It was exceptionally hard for him to make a full recovery. For the whole of the next year, he needed the wheelchair to navigate himself. He’d almost exclusively locked himself in the study to do his work there. On top of that, he’d conduct meetings in the form of video
conferences.
Spring came and he moved back into his previous manor. However, he rarely left the premises. He spent most of his time in the manor, staring at the stuff Zoe left behind once he was done with his work.
Yanni called him on the phone frequently, always asking him to move to Silvercrest and live with them. Every time she asked him about it, he’d lower his head and look at his feet. Then, he’d tell her that he was on a work trip and it might take years for him to come back.
As time went by, the little girl started to think that he really was on an overseas work trip.
He never asked Zoe about their second baby, nor did she mention it to him. He knew that her pride was stopping her. As far as she was would she tell him
concerned, he had slept with another lady. So, why
that she was pregnant with his baby again?
Then, autumn came. Zoe gave birth to a boy and named him Jamie
Lockwood.
Mason sat in the study by himself throughout the whole night. Did it mean anything? Did she name their baby boy Jamie and keep his last name because she still had feelings for him?
Be that as it may, he no longer had the courage to ask her about it.
It was quiet in the middle of the night. He could clearly hear the sound of a car pulling into the manor downstairs. Lisa moved fast and was already climbing the stairs before Layla had time to inform him about her arrival.
Lisa had aged incredibly in the past year. However, she had never been more energized than she was now. Throwing the door open, she spoke to Mason in a joyful tone that was also laced with a hint of sorrow, “Zoe gave birth to a boy, Mason! She gave the Lockwood family an heir!”
Mason was sitting in his wheelchair, as usual. Underneath the glow of the light, there was no emotion to be found in his lean, dashing
features.
Seeing her son’s lack of reaction, she tempered her exhilaration, walked over to him, and crouched by his wheelchair. “Why aren’t you happy about it? Your baby boy was very healthy and his last name is Lockwood. Jamie Lockwood!”
Gripping the wheelchair’s armrest, she burst into tears and said, “Zoe still gave our family’s last name to her baby boy! You really should win her back, Mason. After all, Yanni and Jamie are part of the Lockwood family. Needless to say, Zoe’s your wife too.
“Are you really going to let them stay in Silvercrest? It’s a fine city, but it isn’t home. It isn’t where they belong!”
