The sales assistant served them two cups of coffee, but Zoe didn’t drink a drop of it. Instead, she trained her gaze at Gabriela. 

Gabriela collected her thoughts and spoke, her eyes staring off into the distant past, “Back then, it was Ava who got in touch with me at the beginning. She said that Mason wanted to make a deal with me.” 

She raised her cup of coffee and took a sip, her lean fingers were shaking slightly. 

By the time she spoke again, she was smiling bitterly. “I hated him very much back then. There was no way I’d help him in any way. However, Ava made an offer I couldn’t possibly refuse. Apparently, Mason was going to give me a project that was worth billions of dollars. I could’t possibly turn down such an offer! 

“Then, Ava brought me to the hospital to sign the contract. That’s when I saw him. He looked so… Well, he certainly looks better now than when I first saw him. It was awful. He was just lying on the bed quietly. He couldn’t even move a finger. 

“Do you know what was the most heart-wrenching thing, Zoe? I could tell from his eyes that he was at peace with it. He accepted his sorry 

state!” 

Gabriel was trying to repress the overwhelming sadness, but tears were already rolling down Zoe’s cheeks. She tried valiantly to hold them back and listen to the rest of the story. 

Gabriela gave herself a moment before continuing. “I signed the contract and I secured the project. So, I honored my end of the bargain by pretending to be his girlfriend when I met you! 

“You were probably humiliated horribly back in Kirk Manor, but here’s

something you didn’t know. Mason was still struggling with the wheelchair back then. However, he insisted on listening in to our whole conversation from the bedroom!

Zoe sat there quietly, trying to process everything she had just heard. 

She didn’t even know when Gabriela left. All she knew was that her cup of coffee had gone cold when she took a sip. 

The rain was heavy and the night was dark outside the window. 

The saic assistant came over and said gently, “Ms. Gabriela explicitly told us to get you changed into something dry and comfortable, Mrs. Lockwood!” 

The fact was that Zoe felt chilled to the bone, but she was in no mood to get changed.
