Chapter 424
Zoe felt a lump in her throat.
Putting down her phone, her mind traveled back to when they used to live in Kirk Manor together. That was when she realized how reluctant he was to say goodbye to her the night before Yanni’s surgery. She was so concerned about her daughter’s condition that she didn’t notice how strangely he was acting.
With that said, it wouldn’t have made a difference. Even if she knew about the truth and was given the choice to travel back to the past, she wouldn’t have been able to stop him.
More importantly, it was pointless to think about changing the past. What she needed to focus on was the present and the future.
Instead of replying to his text, she asked Ava out. If she was going to win him back, she’d need his assistant’s help.
As it turned out, Ava was more than willing to lend her a hand. After all, she worked for Mason for a long time and she was rather fond of Zoe. She genuinely wished for both of them to be happy.
By the time she hung up on Zoe, she felt a lump in her throat. Perhaps their reconciliation would speed up his recovery too.
They agreed to meet in a coffee shop at one in the afternoon. Zoe was the first to arrive. She ordered a cup of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee and a cup of Earl Gray tea for Ava.
It took Ava longer than she anticipated. She was still wearing formal attire when she arrived. Taking a seat, she apologized to Zoe hastily,” Pardon me. I had to deal with an emergency.”
“The past two years have got to be tough for you, Ava!” Taking Ava’s
hands in hers, she said affectionately, “I know Mason can be insufferable sometimes. It couldn’t have been easy, working for him.”
Feeling a little moved by what she said, Ava gripped her hands tighter and said softly, “I feel much better now! You have no idea how scared I was a couple of years back.
“I felt a shiver down my spine at the idea of bringing a lawyer before you and passing Mr. Mason’s will to you. I’m so relieved that’s not how it turned out.” Ava didn’t cry easily, but there were tears in her
eyes now.
Zoe was quite shaken by what she said, but she suppressed her feelings and said gently, “I’m certain that his mind has been in a dark place for the past couple of years. He might not even listen to my ideas at the beginning, that’s where need you to come in, Ava.”
Wiping her tears away, Ava said, “Consider it done! Just tell me what to do, and I’ll carry out your orders to the letter!”
After that, Zoe didn’t say anything for a spell. So did Ava.
Both of them took the time to savor their beverages. They rarely had the chance to meet up with each other like this. In fact, they only had
the luxury of meeting every two years.
As time went by, they came to appreciate each other more and mo
Ava stayed with Zoe for an hour before telling her that she needed t go back to work. Zoe didn’t make her stay because she had an appointment with Cecil. However, she did give Ava a document before
she left.
Ava read it and was stunned. It was a Silvercrest student’s visa and it
had her kid’s name was on it. She was so moved and grateful that she couldn’t resist calling out to her. “Zoe!”
Zoe responded lightly, “I know you’ve been trying to send your kid to

study in Silvercrest. I also know that it’s impossible for you to ask a favor from Mason, given the situation we’re in now. In the future, you can come to me if you need any help.”
The next thing she knew, Ava hugged her tightly. “Thank you, Zoe! This is such a precious gift!”
Zoe hugged her back. Maintaining her composure, she said softly,” I’m the one who should thank you, Ava. You looked after Mason for a long time. You’re the reason I could rest easy because I know you’re with him every step of the way. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to keep moving forward and plan for our future.”
Standing upright, Ava flashed her a smile. “Fine. I guess we don’t owe each other anything.”
With tears in her eyes, Zoe said, “Exactly!”
Ava left the coffee shop.
Zoe sat there for a while longer before she decided she should leave too. She had just stood up when she saw someone she hadn’t seen in a long time.
It was Lisa.
It had only been a few years since she last saw her, but Lisa had toned down a lot. She was no longer the sharp, aggressive lady sh
used to be.
“Can I have a word with you, Zoe?”
