Chapter 433
Both of them texted each other for a good while…
She dozed off in the middle of composing a reply text. Hours passed before she she woke up. There were about a dozen unread texts, all
of them from Mason.
She read each and every text in the dead of night, but she didn’t reply to him.
At the next moment, she rose and went to look at both of her kids.
She may not have been staying with Mason in the same manor and their relationship was on a precarious balance, at best. However, it was a big step forward for them to be able to live in the same city.
They were well on their way to fixing all of the painful history they shared in the past.
At some point, they started keeping in touch on a frequent basis.
Carrying themselves like the best ex-couple there ever was, they worked together to raise their kids and discussed every challenge they faced while their kids grew up…
Yanni was six years old and was studying in kindergarten. Zoe sai You have all sorts of connections in Brookesville. So, you can tal charge of her alma mater.”
Mason agreed to her suggestion and started looking for schools fo his little girl.
They chatted with each other over the phone many times. On some occasions, Scarlett was the one who picked up the phone before passing it to him.
Throughout all these times, Zoe had never shown any signs of jealousy, nor would she ask him about his relationship with Scarlett. It was her way of respecting him.
Sometimes, Zoe would send the kids to him when they wanted to spend time with him. Other times, Deborah would send them to him.
Zoe didn’t really go to the second floor, either. Layla would hand her the utility bills for her to deal with them. It used to be Ava’s job, but she was more than willing to help lighten the load. So, she’d settle the
bills when she had the time.
She had taken good care of everything in the manor. However, she kept a respectable distance from Mason and held back from
discussing any aspect of their private life.
In the blink of an eye, half a month had come and gone.
It was a rainy night and autumn had just arrived.
Mason was sitting quietly by the window in his study, staring at the drizzling rain outside. The grandfather clock downstairs rang its bell
ten times.
Zoe was probably free now, he thought to himself.
He had always looked forward to this hour every night. All he war was to chat with her for a brief moment, even if he had to do it d the phone.
Then, it occurred to him. They’d swapped their roles.
In the past, Zoe had always waited on him when they were still married. Now, however, he was the one waiting on her. It turned out that he, too, was willing to do it and would feel empty and
disappointed when she didn’t have time for him, all because he loved
her.
Then, someone knocked on the door.
Coming back to his senses, he said lightly, “Come in!”
Scarlett opened the door and entered the study with his medicine and a glass of water. On top of that, she brought a bucket to soak his feet as well. Feeding the medicine to him affectionately, she crouched and was about to do a foot soak for him.
“Forget it!”
Casting his glance out the window again, he barked coldly.
Scarlett held her breath before responding tenderly, “Foot soaks promote blood circulation, Mr. Mason…”
His patience had come to an end. “I said, forget it.” With that, he turned his head and stared at her.
He knew full well how she felt about him. He had too much experience in this to not see what she had been doing. For the past few months, she hadn’t overstepped any boundaries. That was why he turned a blind eye to it and didn’t point it out all this time.
On the other hand, Scarlett was slightly embarrassed. After a b moment, she lowered her voice and said, “Got it, Mr. Mason! I’l everything you ask me to do, nothing more, nothing less.”
Deciding to let her off the hook, he asked her to get out of the stu She picked up the stuff and left hastily. Just as she got to the do she uttered suddenly, “Tomorrow’s your routine checkup, Mr. Mason Ms. Zoe called earlier and said that she’ll be waiting for you at the hospital.”
He was gloomy a second ago, but he lit up immediately at what she said. His voice was husky when he asked, “Did you just say she’ll be waiting for me at the hospital?”
