Chapter 467

Mason rejected her advice.

Looking at her quietly, he said, “I’m perfectly calm now. I don’t need your pity, Zoe, and I certainly don’t appreciate being treated like a charity case. I want you to leave!”

She froze where she stood and asked him softly, “Why would you say something like this?!”

He didn’t respond to her immediately.

Instead, he stared at her intensely. After a long time, he took a cigarette out of his front pocket with trembling fingers and lit it with his one good hand.

Instead of smoking it, he lowered his head and watched as the wisps of smoke lingered in the air.

After a long time, he said meekly, “Haven’t you always wanted to

know if I was aware that you were pregnant with Jamie a couple of years back? Well, I was! Ava gave me your pregnancy test result on the day you left.

“She told me that you were pregnant and that you were flying back to Silvercrest. She also said that I should chase after you and win you back… Do you know how I felt at that moment, Zoe?

“I really wanted to win you back, but I couldn’t do anything because I was sitting in a damned wheelchair. I couldn’t even stand up on my own if I fell out of it. It was clear to me that I was far from normal!

“Then, you returned to Brookesville I knew very well that you have a boyfriend, but I couldn’t resist the temptation.

“However, every time we had sex, I couldn’t help but think if I should

moments, but sorrow and pain always overshadowed them.”

After a brief pause, he looked at her solemnly and said, “It’s over between us!”

Instead of answering him immediately, she put down her high heels and slipped her feet into a pair of indoor slippers before hanging her windbreaker on a coat rack by the door.

She looked at it and murmured, “Make sure you think it through,

Mason. I’ll never come back again once we end things here. I can’t keep giving you my love only to receive nothing in return! David and I had gone our separate ways a long time ago. For the record, we never slept together either.”

She felt that she was so pathetic.

However, none of that changed his mind. “I’m sick of torturing myself! It’s over, Zoe!”

She was still standing at the door. She refused to look at him because she knew she’d cry the moment she did it.

She felt sorry for herself.

Blinking softly, she tried hard to hold her tears back. However, her voice was broken, “You said you tortured yourself! Well, that makes

the two of us!

“I told you, Mason. Loving someone doesn’t make someone yours. If you really feel that way about us, perhaps we really should end things between us! Don’t drag the kids into this. They’re still too young to understand what we adults have to deal with.”

Her grip on the document tightened and her fingers couldn’t help but tremble uncontrollably.

After a brief moment, Mason responded, “It’s decided, then.” He wheeled himself and went upstairs.

She was left alone in the living room, her eyes lowered.

She didn’t beat herself up for too long. In fact, she didn’t even cry as much as she thought she would.

That night, she couldn’t fall asleep.

She knew Mason was in the study. So, she went to the master bedroom. She ironed all of his clothes and put all of his medicines back in place. Then, she changed the bedsheet into his favorite color,

grey.

The sun rose over the horizon and she woke the kids up, looking after

them lovingly.

She said to her little boy, “I need to take you with me and send Yanni to school. Also, your dad needed to focus on his treatments for a good while. We should leave him to it. I’ll bring you kids here again when the school holidays arrive.”

Both of the kids nodded understandingly.

Zoe made all the arrangements and left with both of her kids at eight in the morning.

The day went on as if nothing important had happened.

She was hurt badly on the inside but she closed herself to it. Being a thirty-one-year-old lady, she thought this was the best way to love Mason now. She’d back out of their relationship gracefully and avoid making things difficult for him. She’d respect his choice.
