Chapter 474
Zoe took it, thanked him gently, and left.
Mason sat in the limousine and watched as she left. She was holding the bouquet of roses close to her chest and walking on the snow
when he asked Luke softly, “Am I a bother to her?”
The old chauffeur responded immediately, “Impossible, Mr. Mason! Why, you’ve never spoken in this manner.”
Chuckling dryly, Mason said, “Well. I didn’t use to be a gimp!”
Sitting upright, he wore a gloomy expression on his dashing face.” Take me home!”
…
The snow kept falling since Christmas Eve and didn’t stop until it was
New Year.
New Year was supposed to be celebrated.
However, Mason had a high fever that wasn’t coming down on th day. Layla called Ava, who came over to check and decided it was serious. So, she called Cecil over.
By the time Cecil arrived, Mason was already dizzy from the fever and slipping in and out of consciousness. He gave him an injection and called the private doctor over to ask about his condition.
Worried that she might be held accountable, the private doctor told him everything. “I don’t know what went over Mr. Mason for the past week. He kept pushing himself to do the physiotherapy as if there
was no tomorrow!
“I tried to reason with him, but he wouldn’t listen. You know how he is,
Dr. Cecil. How was I supposed to make him listen?”
Cecil didn’t criticize her. Instead, he asked her to leave the room.
Moments later, Ava asked him worryingly, “What happened to Mr.
Mason?”
He was packing up his briefcase when he said lightly, “There was nothing wrong with him aside from the fact that he fell ill because of
her!
“He was pushing himself so hard because he wanted to stand with his own two feet again. He couldn’t wait to win her back. All that rushing has taken a toll on him.”
He looked at Ava and smiled.
Ava was sharp. It took her less than a second to know who Cecil was referring to. She couldn’t help but feel sorry for Mason. “Why would he do this to himself? He pushed Zoe away when she wanted to look after him. Now that she’s gone, he misses having her around.”
Cecil smiled helplessly and said, “Such is the foolishness of a man’s pride!”
That was when someone opened the door.
Lisa came in with a bowl of herbal soup. She was a little
uncomfortable when she saw Cecil. In the past, she had mistaken him for Westley’s son and insulted him harshly. On top of that, she wrongfully defamed his mother too.
On the other hand, he was much more relaxed.
He was about to give them some space when Mason, who was lying
on the bed, started to mumble in his sleep. He kept muttering the
same name.
At first, they couldn’t make out what he was saying. Then, he
muttered it with more urgency and the name became clearer.
“Zoe…
“Don’t leave me, Zoe…”
:
Mason kept muttering ‘Zoe’ over and over again, asking her to stay with him. A tear fell from the corner of his eye.
His dreams were the only place he dared to openly admit how he felt about her.
“I’ve always loved you. You’re the only one I’ve ever loved. You used to accuse me of not knowing how to love someone, so I pulled myself together and learned how to do it. If I can’t love you, then I’d rather not love at all. I won’t ever love anyone else.”
It was so bold that it plucked at their heartstrings, even Lisa’s eyes
turned red.
She was the one who raised him and she had literally not taught him anything like this. If the dream was the only place he could utter these words, then it really goes to show how he had always suppressed his emotions.
His relationship with Zoe had been an incredibly shaky one because he didn’t know how to love someone.
Lisa wept pitifully. “I’m sorry, Mason”
She was an extremely proud lady, but she put it aside and begged Cecil to stay here and look after her son. Turning to Ava, she also pleaded with her to keep working for him. She begged a lot of people in a short amount of time.
In the end, she covered her face and cried her eyes out.
At the next moment, someone opened the bedroom door.
This time, it was Westley.
