Chapter 54
Sherry willingly let him pull her along, her face flushed. “Do I look unattractive like this?”
Mr. Sniper held her gently and said, “You’re mine, even if you’re not beautiful. No one
can take you away from me.” “It’s my fault, Sherry; I shouldn’t have let you go to the Civil
Affairs Bureau alone.”
Sherry’s nose tingled a little. She didn’t know why, but she always felt fragile in his
presence.
Not long ago, when she was in Mateo’s car, she could confidently answer him. But
when they returned to 2307 and she felt his embrace, she couldn’t help but cry.
“Are you scared?” Mr. Sniper asked, tenderly brushing her long hair.
Sherry nodded. “A little.”
“Don’t worry, I’m here, okay?”
Sherry bit her lower lip and leaned into his embrace. “I’m not sure why Malcolm went
crazy today. When I called him, I could hear him arguing with Sophia, and today… I really
don’t understand. Wasn’t he deeply in love with Sophia? How did he change so
quickly?”
Mr. Sniper’s voice remained as gloomy as ever. “A man like Malcolm may like a woman,
but he will always love only himself.”
Sherry wholeheartedly agreed with this statement. “Malcolm is the sole heir to the Ford
family. He
grew up spoiled and has an especially arrogant personality. Sophia is also
foolish. Marrying into the Ford family means becoming an old maid.”
“What does it matter? Sherry no longer sees you as her cousin, so you don’t have to
treat her like a sister either. Sophia is an adult, and she chose this path on her own.
Whether the outcome is sweet or bitter, she has to bear it herself.”
Sherry understood this logic.
She was just feeling a little down.
Sophia had most likely planned everything, but she didn’t anticipate Malcolm changing

his mind so quickly.
“I just want to finalize the divorce with Malcolm as soon as possible. I don’t want
anything else,” Sherry remarked.
“If he doesn’t want to divorce willingly, then we’ll go through legal means,” Sniper said. “I
didn’t want to be too extreme, but what Malcolm did today has crossed my limit. I can’t
let him live carefree without facing any consequences.”
“Let’s not bother with him, okay?” Sherry suggested.
Mr. Sniper was displeased. “Don’t you want revenge?”
“I don’t want it anymore.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course,” Sherry replied hastily. “I just want to live well now, work hard, and earn.
money to help my uncle with his illness. I don’t care if Malcolm and Sophia are married
or separated. I just want to draw a clear line between us and never have any contact

with them again.”
Mr. Sniper let out a faint sigh. “Sherry, how about we live abroad in the future?”
“Huh? Isn’t Herzoslovakia City good? I still have to take care of my uncle.”
“Medical conditions are also excellent abroad. We can bring your uncle over and take
care of him.”
Sherry paused for a moment before asking, “Is it because there are people in the
country you don’t want to see or things you don’t want to face?”
“Both,” said the sharpshooter. “All I can say is that this place is the root of all my fears,
and I want to take you away and live a normal, peaceful life.”
These words pricked Sherry’s heart like a thorn. It would be a lie to say it didn’t hurt.
All of his fears must be connected to the woman he once loved, right?
Was he terrified of seeing her in her husband’s arms? Or seeing her with a child
already?
Even someone as powerful as Mr. Sniper would have things he couldn’t obtain.
“Let me think about it, okay?”
“Alright.”
Sniper didn’t touch her that night, possibly because she had almost been violated by
Malcolm earlier in the day and was still a little scared. He simply held her waist and fell
asleep.
They lay like two tightly connected spoons, each feeling the other’s heartbeat and body
warmth.
Sniper kissed her forehead before leaving in the morning, as they did every morning
when they parted.
True love was deeper than intense entanglement, even a small kiss on the forehead.
She washed Sniper’s clothes by hand and hung them out to dry in the sun.
As she sat in the sun, she noticed a black item in her white shirt. It appeared to be at
woman’s hair tie!
It felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over her head.
Sherry convinced herself that it couldn’t be. Mr. Sniper wasn’t like Malcolm in how he
treated her.
However, when she removed the item from her shirt, no amount of psychological
comfort could change the truth.
It was a woman’s hair tie.
But the style of the hair tie was outdated, similar to those that were fashionable more
than a decade ago. A slightly worn–out butterfly knot adorned the black elastic band. It
was clear that its owner was a frugal person who hadn’t thrown it away despite its
condition.
An outdated and worn–out appearance…

Perhaps it belongs to one of Mr. Sniper’s female relatives?
Just then, the sound of the door being unlocked could be heard.
Mr. Sniper burst in, looking disoriented. He was sweating profusely as he rummaged.
through the laundry basket and then searched the washing machine.
“Are you looking for this?” Sherry asked, holding out the hair tie in front of him.
Mr. Sniper finally sighed and took the hair tie from her, ignoring its dampness from
being soaked in water. He stuffed it into the innermost part of his shirt, right next to his
heart.
Where she found the hair tie on the shirt
Sherry had never seen Mr. Sniper in such disarray.
She felt a little uneasy in her heart. “Is this hair tie so important to you?”
“It’s more important to me than my life.”
Sherry lowered her head and laughed at herself, yet there was still hope in her heart.
‘Was it left by the woman you loved?”
“Yes.”
“How long have you kept it hidden?”
“Ten years.”
It felt like a needle was pricking her heart. Sherry understood that she couldn’t question
Mr. Sniper like she did Malcolm.
He had never intended to hide it from her in the first place.
He had hinted several times that he had a beloved woman, someone he cherished.
She wasn’t really in a position to be upset right now.
“Sherry, it’s not what you think; I’ll tell you the whole story…”
I don’t want to know; please don’t tell me, Sherry said, shaking her head. “I know you

remember your relationship with her, and I won’t make you forget. I also understand
that you can’t forget. But please, don’t tell me.”
